We often think of grief as something that follows death.

But grief is much bigger than that.

We can grieve a relationship, our health, our independence, a version of ourselves, a future we imagined, a pregnancy that never happened, a culture or Country, a sense of belonging — or something we never actually got to have.

Sometimes we don’t even recognise what we’re feeling as grief. We tell ourselves we should be over it, that nothing really happened, or that other people have it worse.

But grief doesn’t need to be justified by the size of the loss.

Sometimes it simply means: something mattered to me, and now it’s different, gone, or wasn’t able to be.

Maybe we need to make a little more room for all the different things humans grieve. This Grief Awareness Month, perhaps we can make the definition of grief a little bigger.

What else do you think we grieve that we don’t always recognise as grief?

PTSD isn’t always obvious.

Trauma doesn’t only live in memories.

Sometimes it shows up in the body, in relationships, in sleep, in avoidance, or in a constant sense that something isn’t quite safe.

Many people live with the impacts of trauma for years before recognising what they’re experiencing.

If any of these signs feel familiar, know that you’re not alone and support is available.

PTSD is treatable, and healing is possible.
Evidence-based approaches such as trauma-focused psychological therapies, including EMDR, can help many people process traumatic experiences and reduce symptoms.

PTSD isn't always obvious.

When people hear the term PTSD, they often think of flashbacks or traumatic memories.

But PTSD can also affect the way a person feels, thinks, relates to others, and experiences everyday life.

It may look like:
• Feeling constantly on edge or "on alert"
• Avoiding reminders of difficult experiences
• Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares
• Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
• A persistent sense of danger, even when you are safe

PTSD is not a sign of weakness. It is a recognised mental health condition that can develop following exposure to traumatic events.

The good news is that PTSD is treatable. Evidence-based approaches, including trauma-focused psychological therapies and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), have been shown to help many people reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

On PTSD Awareness Day, we acknowledge those living with the impacts of trauma and remind anyone struggling that support is available and recovery is possible.

💚 If this resonates with you, consider reaching out to a trusted support person, your GP, or a mental health professional.

"I'm fine."

It's one of the most common responses we hear.

Sometimes it's true.

Sometimes it's easier than explaining that you're exhausted, overwhelmed, worried, angry, grieving, or simply not coping as well as you used to.

During Men's Mental Health Week, we're reminded that mental health conversations don't need to start with a crisis.

Sometimes they start with a simple:

"How are you really going?"

And just as importantly:

"Do you want to talk about it?"

If you're struggling, you don't have to carry everything on your own.

This isn’t about escaping your life.

It’s about returning to yourself.

Not through bubble baths, wellness trends or another thing to add to your to-do list.

But through space.

Space to think.

Space to reflect.

Space to remember who you are beyond the role of helping everyone else.
