Winter on the Gold Coast is mild. But staying inside day after day still takes a real toll, especially when mental health is already heavy.

For a lot of the people we walk alongside, June and July are the months when the world starts to shrink. The couch feels safer. The front door feels heavier. And before long, a few quiet days have stretched into a few quiet weeks.

So we wanted to share three small reminders about why getting out still matters this winter, and why "small" really is enough.

β†’ A loose routine of stepping outside, even once or twice a week, gently interrupts the cycle of staying in.
β†’ Everyday errands like the shops, a script pickup, or a walk around the block count as real connection.
β†’ And if leaving the house feels too big on your own, you do not have to do it alone. 🀍

Winter is short. One small outing this week is worth more than waiting until you feel ready.

A woman we support once told us she said no to Supported Independent Living for two years. She thought it meant handing over her decisions, her routine, her life. She thought support and independence could not live in the same house.

She was wrong. And she will tell you those two years cost her a lot.

Here is what SIL actually looks like day to day. You decide when you wake up. You decide what is for dinner. You decide who visits and how you spend your Saturday. Staff are there for the parts that feel heavy, like managing medication, preparing meals, or personal care, so your energy is freed up for the life you actually want to build.

The clue is right there in the name. The independence is yours. The support just makes it reachable.

If you or someone you love has been holding off on SIL because it sounds like giving something up, we would gently encourage a closer look. Real support does not take the pen out of your hand. It helps you keep writing. 🏑

Choosing a support provider when you live with a psychosocial disability is a big decision. And not every NDIS provider is set up to do mental health support well.

The difference shows up in the small moments. How a worker responds on a hard day. Whether they understand what recovery actually looks like. How carefully you were matched in the first place.

We've put together 3 simple questions worth asking before you sign with anyone. They cover staff experience, how providers match you with a worker, and the language they use when they talk about the people they support.

For context, every Brave Minds support worker brings at least 5 years of mental health experience or a relevant qualification. We think that kind of standard is a fair thing to ask of anyone you're trusting with your support.

Have a read through the slides, and save this one for later if it might help someone you know. πŸ’›

Most people never ask their support worker why a task is being done a certain way. They assume the provider knows best, so they stay quiet. That silence has a cost.

If you are an NDIS participant, you are allowed to ask questions. Real questions. Specific ones. The kind that might feel awkward in the moment but matter for the support you actually receive.

Things like:
"Can you explain what you are doing and why?"
"What does my NDIS funding actually cover for this support?"
"Can I request a different support worker if this isn't working?"
"How will you know if my support needs change over time?"
"Can I see a written plan of what my support looks like?"
"I want to understand this before I agree to it."

None of these make you difficult. None of them make you a burden. Person-centred support means the plan is built around you, your goals, and your life. You get to ask how and why decisions are being made.

A good provider will welcome these questions. A good support worker will sit with you and answer them honestly. If that is not happening, that is information worth paying attention to.

You know your life better than anyone. Your questions belong in the room. 🀍

Grocery shopping felt impossible on Tuesday.

Not because of a crisis. Just because leaving the house had become genuinely hard. The list sat on the bench for three days. The fridge stayed empty. Each time you thought about going, the weight got heavier.

This is exactly what NDIS community access funding is designed for.

There's a quiet belief we hear often: "My situation isn't bad enough." People wait until they're at rock bottom before asking for support, thinking psychosocial funding is reserved for crisis moments. It isn't.

Severe and persistent mental health challenges show up in the ordinary stuff. The errands that drain you. The medication that needs collecting. The appointment you keep rescheduling. Having someone alongside you for those moments can be the difference between getting through the day or not.

You don't need to be in crisis to deserve support. You just need to be living it. 🀍

Choosing a mental health support provider is one of the most personal decisions you will make on your NDIS journey, and the things that matter most are rarely found on a glossy website.

When you are living with severe and persistent mental health challenges, standard disability support is not always a perfect fit. Psychosocial support requires a deeply specific approach. It is not just about helping you tick off daily tasks. It is about having people by your side who understand that some days are about building independence, and other days are simply about getting through the morning.

As a team on the Gold Coast that works exclusively in this space, we wanted to share four crucial things to look for when comparing providers:

1. True mental health experience: Ask if the support workers have specific training and experience in psychosocial disability. General disability care is valuable, but mental health support requires a different understanding of fluctuating needs.

2. A thoughtful matching process: Genuine support is built on mutual trust. Ask a provider exactly how they match you with a worker. You should have a say in who comes into your home, ensuring your personalities and interests genuinely align.

3. Action behind the word "person-centered": Many organizations use this term, but ask them what it looks like on a hard day. Real choice and control means you guide the pace of your support, without pressure or judgment.

4. Dedication to your long-term team: High turnover can be incredibly disruptive when you are trying to build safety. Find out how the provider supports their staff so those staff can show up consistently for you, week after week.

Taking the time to ask these questions helps ensure you find a team that feels like a natural extension of your life πŸ’™

If you ever want to chat through how we approach psychosocial support at Brave Minds, or if you just need help navigating these decisions, our doors are always open.

Meet Jonathan Rogers, the Director and founder of Brave Minds Social Services.

He started this organisation because he kept seeing the same thing happen on the Gold Coast: people living with severe and persistent mental health challenges falling through the cracks. No consistent support. No one showing up the next day, or the day after that.

That bothered him. Enough to build something different.

Brave Minds exists because Jonathan believed people deserve more than a phone number and a waitlist. They deserve real people walking alongside them, in their homes, out in the community, and in supported accommodation when that's what's needed.

He's not interested in mission statement language. He's interested in whether the person we supported yesterday is doing a little better today. That's the standard he holds the whole team to.

If you've ever wondered who's behind Brave Minds, it's him. And a team he's built carefully, one person at a time. πŸ’™
