I’m stressed. I’m fasting. I’m eating less. So why am I not losing weight — and why am I exhausted?

Because weight regulation is influenced by far more than the fasting window alone.

Chronic stress can alter HPA-axis signalling and cortisol output, affecting blood glucose regulation, appetite, sleep and recovery.

Poor sleep can reduce insulin sensitivity and make appetite regulation harder.

Persistent low-grade inflammation can further disrupt metabolic signalling.

And prolonged under-fuelling can reduce training capacity, spontaneous movement and overall energy expenditure — while increasing fatigue, hunger and cravings later in the day.

The pattern can become:

stress → fasting harder → under-fuelling → low energy → less movement → cravings → larger evening intake → poorer sleep → repeat

This is why simply eating less or fasting longer is not always the answer.

Fasting is a tool. It is not automatically the right tool when the body is already under physiological stress.

The better question is:

Is my current strategy actually supporting my energy, glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, sleep and recovery?

Weight loss is not just about eating less.

The whole metabolic environment matters.

Can chamomile tea actually help you sleep?

Chamomile contains apigenin, a plant compound that interacts with GABA-A receptors involved in relaxation and sleep.

That may help explain why chamomile has traditionally been used before bed — particularly when the nervous system is still switched on at the end of the day.

Research suggests chamomile may support:
• relaxation before sleep
• sleep onset
• reduced nervous system arousal
• a more consistent bedtime routine

It is not a sedative, and the effect is usually subtle. Think of it as supporting the transition into sleep rather than forcing sleep.

A warm caffeine-free drink also creates a behavioural cue: same ritual, same time, repeated regularly. Over time, the brain starts recognising that cue as part of winding down.

Simple habit. Interesting biochemistry.

**Why does your body recover more slowly when your mind is under pressure?**

Because mental stress is still physical stress.

Your brain responds through the **HPA axis and autonomic nervous system**, changing cortisol and catecholamine signalling, sleep quality, muscle tension, pain sensitivity, inflammatory activity and recovery capacity.

That can show up as:

Persistent soreness.
Heavy muscles.
More pain.
Poorer sleep.
Lower training tolerance.
Fatigue that lingers.

Stress itself is not the problem.

**The problem is when demand keeps exceeding your opportunity to recover.**

So when your body suddenly stops bouncing back the way it used to, don't only ask:

**“What am I doing physically?”**

Ask:

**“What else is my body carrying?”**

Your brain may call it pressure.

**Your physiology still has to pay for it.**

Have you noticed that your mood and energy change during winter?

You're not alone.

Shorter days, less sunlight, colder weather and spending more time indoors can all influence how we feel. Our sleep, movement, stress levels and nutrition often change too, affecting both our body and mind.

While it's normal to have days when you feel a little flatter, persistent low mood deserves attention and support.

This winter, be kind to yourself. Prioritise nourishing food, regular movement, time outdoors whenever possible and moments of rest.

Small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference.

Why can you be completely exhausted… yet still unable to switch off?

“Wired but tired” describes an uncomfortable mismatch: your energy is depleted, while your brain and nervous system remain activated.

Psychologically, prolonged pressure can train the brain towards hypervigilance. You keep anticipating, planning, problem-solving and scanning for what needs attention next. Even when the external demand stops, the internal state may continue.

Physiologically, that heightened arousal interacts with the HPA axis, autonomic nervous system, circadian rhythm and sleep regulation. Add poor sleep, fluctuating blood glucose, caffeine and inadequate recovery, and the cycle can reinforce itself.

You feel exhausted → push harder → use stimulation to function → struggle to unwind → sleep poorly → wake exhausted again.

And sometimes fatigue has another driver entirely: iron or B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal changes, sleep apnoea, inadequate nutrition, chronic illness or medication effects all deserve consideration.

The important question isn’t simply:

“How do I get more energy?”

It is:

“Why does my body still feel it needs to stay switched on?”

That is where understanding wired but tired becomes much more useful.

Can stress really make you gain weight - even when you haven’t dramatically changed what you eat?

The relationship between stress and weight is far more interesting than the familiar “cortisol makes you fat” explanation.

When the brain perceives ongoing demand, the HPA axis helps coordinate the stress response. Cortisol mobilises glucose so your body has energy available to respond. That is normal physiology.

The problem becomes more complex when stress is persistent.

Stress can simultaneously influence appetite and reward pathways, glucose and insulin regulation, sleep quality, recovery, food choices and daily movement. In some people, prolonged glucocorticoid exposure is also associated with greater central fat accumulation.

Then another feedback loop can develop:

More stress → poorer sleep → altered appetite → less energy → less movement → poorer recovery → increasingly difficult weight regulation.

This is why weight change deserves a broader conversation than simply calories, exercise or cortisol.

The more useful question is:

What has changed in the physiology and lifestyle that regulate this person’s weight?

Understanding those drivers gives us somewhere meaningful to start.

STRESS CAN HURT YOUR GUT — LITERALLY.

When you’re stressed, your digestive system feels it.

The brain–gut axis, autonomic nervous system and HPA axis continuously regulate digestive function. Under sustained stress, changes in autonomic signalling and stress hormones can alter gut motility, gastric function and visceral sensitivity.

The result? Bloating, cramping, reflux, altered bowel movements and a gut that suddenly feels far more reactive to food.

As the abdomen becomes distended or irritated, the effects can extend beyond the gut. Increased abdominal pressure, altered diaphragmatic mechanics and sensitised visceral nerve pathways can contribute to sensations such as upper abdominal or chest pressure and referred discomfort into the back.

That’s why digestive symptoms during stress aren’t necessarily “just anxiety” — there is real physiology connecting the brain, nervous system and gastrointestinal tract.

Sometimes the question isn’t simply:

“What did I eat?”

It’s:

“Why is my gut reacting so strongly right now?”

Why does your gut suddenly hurt when you’re stressed, exhausted or after eating?

Because digestion doesn’t operate independently from your nervous system.

Your brain and gut communicate continuously through the gut–brain axis. When stress activates the sympathetic nervous system and HPA axis, it can alter gut motility, digestive secretions and visceral sensitivity — contributing to cramping, bloating, reflux, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea.

Fatigue can add another layer. Poor sleep and physical exhaustion can influence stress physiology and pain sensitivity, making an already sensitive digestive system more reactive.

Then you eat. Eating naturally stimulates gastrointestinal movement. In a sensitised gut, normal stretching, contractions or fermentation may suddenly feel uncomfortable or painful.

That’s why focusing only on “What did I eat?” can miss an important part of the picture.

Sometimes the better question is:

“What is making my gut so reactive?”

Your symptoms may be digestive, but the mechanism can involve your gut, brain and nervous system together.
