Safer health care through training and research excellence in the field of simulation.

The HNE Simulation Centre is an interprofessional, multi-disciplinary, educational facility within Hunter New England Local Health District. We deliver simulation-based training that addresses clinical and non-clinical challenges, to more than 4000 participants each year. The centre is supported by a team of specialist doctors and senior nurses who are certified simulation instructors and clinical

ly active in the specialty areas of anaesthesia, intensive care (adult, paediatric and neonatal) and emergency medicine. Research:
Our multidisciplinary faculty have a track record in innovation and research. We conduct human factors research that aims to improve patient safety by developing new tools and guidelines to use in clinical practice, particularly in emergency situations, and testing new processes and equipment prior to their implementation into clinical practice. We use in situ simulation as a research and quality improvement tool to analyse equipment and environments at the design and pre-commissioning stages, and to identify latent safety threats in existing spaces. We are interested in resilient health care and understanding how expertise contributes to the capacity of a system to respond to challenges. We also conduct research into why and how simulation works as a teaching tool and are particularly interested in understanding which elements of a clinical encounter should be retained in a simulated encounter. The centre also provides support for simulation-based training including instructor and faculty development, curriculum development and evaluation, and advice regarding the establishment and running of simulation centres.

🌟 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱

We welcomed today's participants, 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 (IMGs), to the HNE Simulation Centre for a day focused on preparing for one of the most challenging moments in clinical practice — when a patient suddenly deteriorates.

Participants stepped into immersive, simulation-based scenarios, working alongside nurses and senior clinicians to gain hands-on experience.

👏 Such a pleasue to meet you all! We hope the day has helped build confidence for those moments when teamwork, communication and clinical skills matter most.

🚐✈️𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 | 𝗚𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗵

Last week, our simulation team packed up mannequins, clinical and simulation equipment and headed to Gunnedah for two days of hands-on clinical simulation training.

Part of the team hit the road with a van full of simulation gear, while the rest of the team took to the skies with the incredible support of Angel Flight Australia

Once we arrived, the van was unpacked, the simulation environment was set up, and participants got straight into it — working through realistic scenarios, making decisions under pressure, communicating as a team, then coming together to reflect and learn.

🤝𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

💙A huge thank you to 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻, Clinical Nurse Educator, for her support throughout the day. Alison was incredibly organised and attentive, always anticipating what was needed and stepping in to help wherever she could. She played an important role in bringing participants together and making sure each day was a success.

🙏 Each training day was subsidised by the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 through Glencore funding, which helped cover registration costs for participating rural clinicians.

⏱️𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆?

🍃For many rural clinicians, paediatric trauma is something they may only see occasionally. But when it happens, the stakes are high and teams need to be ready.

That's the thinking behind 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮, a simulation-based course developed by 𝗗𝗿 𝗦. 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗻 through the 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸'𝘀, 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺.

The course gives Clinicians the opportunity to practise managing seriously injured children in a safe environment before they face these situations in real life. It focuses not only on clinical care, but also the communication, teamwork and leadership that are critical during a trauma emergency.

🏥As the 𝗣𝗮𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗡𝗦𝗪, John Hunter Children's Hospital supports the care of seriously injured children from across our region.

Last week Hunter New England Local Health District 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘀 came together at the HNE Simulation Centre to participate in the Tiny Tots Trauma course. The realistic paediatric trauma scenarios included:
🩺 Assessment and management of injured children
🚑 Resuscitation and stabilisation
🤝 Teamwork, leadership and role allocation
📣 Communication and speaking up for safety
⚕️ Coordination of retrieval and transfer

The course brought together Clinicians and simulation faculty from 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 and HNE Simulation Centre, combining their expertise to help strengthen paediatric trauma capability across Northern NSW.

The program was subsidised by the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 through Glencore funding, which helped cover registration costs for participating rural clinicians.

🏥🩵Yesterday, ED medical and nursing staff participated in realistic paediatric emergency scenarios as part of our 𝗣𝗮𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲.

From 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 to 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, participants put their skills to the test in a safe, immersive learning environment designed to prepare teams for high-acuity paediatric presentations in the Emergency Department.

🗣️Feedback from the day highlighted the value of 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰, 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀, with participants reporting 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 and taking learning points directly back to their everyday practice. Several described the course as "𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹" and said they would 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀.
