Our Centre of Excellence in Transforming Gut Health (Previously CRE- Digestive Health) supports gut research, training and collaboration.

Our Centre is funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centres of Research Excellence program, from 2020-2024. It brings together researchers from universities, hospitals and research institutions in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. World leading researchers, clinicians and healthcare providers are joining with stakeholders, patients and carers to improve the understanding, diagnosis and management of chronic digestive diseases.

Upcoming Events: UEG - United European Gastroenterology Week (UEGW) is a highly-anticipated 4-day annual congress, bringing together digestive health experts from around the world to share the latest research and advancements. UEGW is returning next week - taking place in Barcelona and online, from October 17 – 20. The CRE-TGH is excited to announce that several of our researchers have had posters accepted for display at UEGW 2026.

National Eosinophilic Week (NEOSW)is taking place from 2-8 August 2026! Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell, and NEOSW aims to increase community awareness and understanding of eosinophil-associated diseases. Landmarks, buildings, and bridges across Australia and New Zealand are lit up in pink and purple until Saturday, the colours representing eosinophils.

NeuroGut 2026 was Singapore’s flagship meeting dedicated to neurogastroenterology, gastrointestinal motility, and Disorders of Gut–Brain Interaction (DGBI). Representing the CRE-TGH, Professor Gerald Holtmann and Dr Ayesha Shah attended the conference, as well as University of Newcastle researcher Dr Georgina Williams.

Recently CRE Chief Investigator Nick Talley spoke with the Australian Prescriber about his recently published article in their June Edition. Nick talks about the clinical features associated with IBS and potential investigations, and provided insights on how to take a holistic approach to care, including diet, medications and psychological therapies.
