In recognition of Men’s Health Week, Calvary Mater Newcastle is encouraging men across the Hunter to take a proactive approach to their health and wellbeing through a free community information event.

On Wednesday 24 June, Calvary Mater Newcastle will host a dedicated Men’s Health Night at Club Charlestown from 5:30pm, featuring presentations from a range of healthcare professionals and guest speakers talking all things ‘men’s health’.

Calvary Mater Newcastle Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Nancy Consoli, said a range of topics will be covered including Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing guidelines, heart health, mental health, bowel cancer, exercise and alcohol, drugs and long-term health.

“Men’s Health Week shines a spotlight on the importance of checking in, both physically and mentally,” Nancy said.

“Too often, men delay seeking help or ignore early warning signs. This free event is designed to encourage open conversations, promote preventative health, and empower men to take positive steps towards their overall wellbeing.

More than art 🎨

At Calvary Mater Newcastle’s Mercy Hospice, something special is happening through the Fig Tree Day Hospice Program. It’s not clinical or structured in the usual sense - it’s simply about people and their stories 💛

Through an Arts Health installation project, kindly funded by Dry July and its supporters, patients living with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, along with their families, are given the opportunity to create, reflect, and share what matters most ✨ For many, it becomes a way to tell their story and leave something behind.

At its core, this project is about storytelling.

👉 What if there were no warning signs?

Prostate cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages - which is why having the right conversations about PSA screening matters.

A simple blood test can help detect if something isn’t quite right. But knowing when to test, and why, isn’t always straightforward. 🩸

That’s where Dr Sam Dickson comes in.

At our upcoming Men’s Health Night event being held at Club Charlestown on Wednesday 24 June, Calvary Mater Newcastle Radiation Oncologist Dr Sam Dickson will share insights into PSA testing guidelines and the importance of screening.

“Prostate cancer can be treated in a range of ways, depending on the severity of the disease. We also know that some prostate cancers are very slow-growing and may never require treatment,” Dr Dickson said.

“Guideline-based PSA screening can help detect prostate cancer at an earlier stage in people who are likely to benefit from treatment, while also helping to avoid unnecessary intervention for those whose cancer may not require active treatment.”

Join Sam, along with a range of other speakers for our Men’s Health Night.

From 27 May to 3 June, we recognise National Reconciliation Week (NRW) - a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation.

The 2026 theme, ‘All In’, is a reminder that reconciliation requires active participation from everyone. It highlights our shared responsibility to support meaningful change and advance the rights and opportunities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

During this important week, our staff took time to reflect on its significance and consider how they can contribute to reconciliation through their actions, relationships, and commitment to culturally responsive care.

Here’s how they’re showing they’re ‘All In’ for Reconciliation 👇

🚀 A major milestone in digital healthcare!

The Single Digital Patient Record (SDPR) is now live across the Hunter New England Local Health District including Calvary Mater Newcastle.

Hunter New England Local Health District, alongside Justice Health NSW and NSW Health Pathology Hunter New England sites, are proud to be the first in NSW to implement SDPR - a transformative step that will roll out to every NSW Health public hospital and health service.

The SDPR brings a patient’s healthcare information together in one secure place, enabling more connected, seamless care, so clinicians have access to the right information, at the right time, when it matters most.

👏 Congratulations and thank you to our staff for their dedication, hard work and commitment in making this transition a success.

🌟 A special thank you to our incredible SDPR team for their tireless support and for ensuring a smooth and successful transition to the SDPR.
