Peanut is an allergen... and a choking risk. Here’s how to introduce it safely.

Peanut is one of the most important allergens to introduce during infancy, and early introduction may help reduce the risk of peanut allergy developing.

But peanut can also be a choking risk when offered incorrectly.

⚠️ Whole peanuts should never be offered to babies.

⚠️ Thick, sticky peanut butter can also be difficult for babies to manage. Always thin it with breastmilk, formula or water until smooth and runny OR spread thinly onto a finger food your baby has had a few times before without any issues.

When introducing peanut:

✔️ Start with a very small amount (around 1/8 teaspoon)

✔️ Gradually increase the amount over 3 separate exposures

✔️ If tolerated, continue offering peanut regularly as part of your baby’s diet

There’s no need to be exact with measurements. Think small to start, then gradually increase over subsequent exposures.

Remember, introducing an allergen isn’t just about the first exposures. Regular exposure is important too, so once tolerated, aim to keep peanut on the menu weekly.

Have you introduced peanut yet, or is it one of the allergens you’re feeling nervous about? 👇

Our next ‘episode’ of our slow cook series is of course our very loved Shredded Chicken! We love this one as it’s a meal you can share with your baby, toddler and any adults! You can absolutely make this one in a pot in the oven, but it works just as well in a slow cooker too.

I also made it in the pressure cooker setting the other day in my Breville Australia fast and slow, and it was perfect! Cooked for 15 minutes, and used 1/2 cup of the broth (so slightly more than the slow cook version) I also shredded in my thermomix on speed 5 reverse for 5 seconds which was amazing - but you can absolutely use a good old fork for this.

Comment ‘recipe’ or ‘chicken’ if you’d like to be sent instructions and full recipe for both the slow cook version and the oven version!

does this look like a dinner at your house? Let’s talk highchair refusal!

It can be so frustrating, but it can be helpful to know what realistic expectations are.

Most experts agree it is appropriate to expect about 2-3 minutes of attention for every year of life. While some babies and toddlers will sit for a lot longer, for many kiddies, this is all they can handle!

Let’s break it down.

⚪️For 6-12 month old babies, expect 1-2 minutes of happy highchair time
⚪️ For one year olds expect 2-3 minutes of happy highchair time
⚪️ For two year olds expect 4-6 minutes of happy highchair time
⚪️ For three year olds expect 6-9 minutes of happy highchair time
⚪️ For four year olds expect 8-12 minutes of happy highchair time.

So how do we give them enough time to eat and fill their tummy? BREAKS. It’s more than ok to break your little one’s mealtime into a few seatings. It’s also more than ok to offer your baby or toddler a movement break if they need it.

For a baby this might be a cuddle, a look out the window or some brief tummy time.

For a toddler this might mean a dance in the dining room or a two minute play with a toy. You might like to use a visual timer to communicate the duration of breaks with your toddler. (A physical timer usually works best but an app called “Little Timer” is also a good one).

The one rule: food stays at the table!

Often little ones will come back and communicate they want more food. If they don’t, you can offer 1-2 times or leave the food on the table for 30 minutes or so. However much they choose to eat, we recommend aiming to keep meals and snacks at least 2 hours apart.

Have you got questions about highchair refusal? Ask our OT Rach in the comments.

A little BTS of one of the food photography shoots for our next book (coming in Jan!) 👀 We nailed 17 recipes today which is a LOT of food 😂 and couldn’t have done it without the most amazing team.

One thing I’ve learnt in business is that you really are only as good as the people you surround yourself with, and I count my lucky stars that I have people around me who care just as much about these books as I do.

In case you didn’t know, we have self-published every single one of our books, which basically means every little detail you see has been done by us. I’ve had quite a few publishing offers over the years that I’ve turned down purely because I feel the need to have all the creative control LOL. It makes it a mammoth job, but I really do think it’s worth it in the end.

Writing a book is really fun initially and then it gets REALLY hard 😂 There are just so many decisions to make that probably seem completely insignificant from the outside, but if you get them wrong I can guarantee you would notice. I am very sick of staring at the pages at this point hahaha but we are SO close now and I cannot wait to finally bring this one to life in January.

I think it might actually be my favourite book yet, which is a big call because I genuinely love all of our books 😂

Also I’m curious because I don’t know if I’ve ever really talked about this on here — did you know we self-publish our books? And would anyone actually be interested in seeing more of what goes into making one? Because there is A LOT that happens behind the scenes that you never see!

a week of baby food meal ideas to save - this was what baby Zigi, 10 months old age this week.

As always there’s a focus on wholefoods, iron rich foods, top allergen exposure and he’s progressing with his textures, he’s having mainly finger foods (BLW) now and some meals that are naturally spoon-fed such as yoghurt and oats etc.

Recipes and meal ideas can be found in our starting solids book Milk to Meals.

If you’d like a copy of our free first food guide, which focuses when to offer which foods, including top allergens and which iron rich foods to prioritise - comment SOLIDS and we will send it to your inbox!

We were asked to comment on this recent ABC ABC News article on the radio today - and this is our response.

There are some really valid and important points raised in this article, but we do think the headline itself is unnecessarily alarming. 🫠

Rest assured, a normal intake of cow’s milk is not going to cause your toddler to die. The cases discussed in this article involved extreme cow’s milk consumption and severe iron-deficiency anaemia, with acute illness then contributing to these children becoming critically unwell.

But what we SHOULD be talking about is just how common low iron appears to be in our toddlers.

Data from the Australian ORIGINS research project found that, among children tested at three years of age:

→ more than 56% had low iron
→ almost 20% had very low iron
→ 2.6% had severe iron-deficiency anaemia

And THAT deserves our attention.

Cow’s milk can absolutely be part of a healthy toddler diet. The problem is when they’re drinking so much of it that they’re filling up on milk instead of eating enough iron-rich food - while high dairy intake around meals can also make it harder to absorb some of the iron they do eat.

Does your child drink cow’s milk? And do you notice it affects their appetite?

As always, if you’d like individualised support for suspected or diagnosed iron deficiency, our team can help through our online clinic. 🤎 also listen to episode 114 of the B**b to Food podcast to hear more!

Did you know you can cook a whole roast chicken in the slow cooker? Because I definitely didn’t... until recently..

Now it’s become one of my favourite weekly dinners.
You get juicy, fall-apart chicken, the house smells amazing, and the best part? While it’s cooking, you can get on with your day.

I picked up this gorgeous organic chicken and a bag of imperfect vegetables from Harris Farm Markets , and honestly, it’s such an easy way to create a nourishing family meal with minimal effort.

And whatever you do... don’t skip the gravy. 🤤
It takes just a couple of minutes to make using the cooking juices, and it’s the best part of the whole meal in my opinion..sorry I got all sassy on you about packet gravy 😅

Comment “CHOOK” and I’ll send you the recipe! 🐓🤎

If your baby doesn’t seem to be chewing yet, don’t rush to change the food … TEACH the skill.

One of the most effective ways that we encourage families to teach chewing ALSO happens to be the most accessible, inexpensive and practical …

Modelling.

Sitting next to your kiddo and SHOWING them what to do can do wonders for their skill development.

If in doubt, start by sharing a meal and sitting alongside your little human. Over-exaggerate the movements of your jaw, tongue and lips and show them how you place your food on your “side teeth”. They will likely soon get the hang of it and will take off themselves!

If you have any questions around chewing or how best to model, share them below and our speech pathologist Em will be responding over the day 👇🏼
