Breathing for Life Trial A research study aimed at improving the health of pregnant women with asthma and their children. This study is no longer recruiting.

If you are a participant and would like to contact our study team call (02) 4042 0992 and talk to Jane. The Breathing for Life Trial (BLT) is a randomised trial of a new asthma management strategy which reduces asthma attacks among pregnant women. We hope to demonstrate that this strategy also improves outcomes for the newborn baby, and has long lasting benefits into childhood. The trial is currently recruiting at Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital. More study centres will be recruiting soon, so stay tuned for more information. If you are interested in participating or would just like more information please call Kelly on 02 40420130 or email [email protected]

Corticosteroid tablets, such as prednisone are a powerful and lifesaving treatment for people with asthma. But these tablets also have negative side effects, especially when taken too often and in large doses.

National Asthma Week last week was a welcome opportunity to put a spotlight on the impact this condition has on the many Australians it affects. Even though Asthma week is over now, we still want to remind all our followers to make sure their action plan is up to date, and to share the updated guidelines around managing your asthma!

This National Asthma Week (1-7 September), has been a good opportunity to remind people with asthma and their families/carers about important changes to asthma management in Australia.

Asthma management isn't just about relieving symptoms; it's about treating what's causing them.

If you're using your blue puffer (SABA) more than 2 days a week on average, it could be a sign that your asthma isn't well controlled.

Using 3 or more SABA canisters per year can increase your risk of an asthma flare-up.

Using a blue puffer alone is not enough to manage your asthma.
Relying on a blue puffer alone doesn't treat the underlying airway inflammation and can increase the risk of a serious asthma flare-up that may require oral steroids or hospitalisation.

For people with mild asthma, an anti-inflammatory reliever (AIR) is now the recommended option because it helps treat the underlying inflammation while also relieving symptoms.

Ask your health care professional today about less SABA, more AIR.

Our research leader, Vanessa Murphy will be on Channel 9 news this afternoon talking about why it's important for women especially to take note of their asthma during hormonal changes of life (eg pregnancy) - we have also launched a new national survey to gather the experiences of mothers with asthma in relation to infant feeding. If you've had a baby in the past 12 months and you have asthma, we'd love to hear from you. The link to the survey is: https://redcap.hmri.org.au/surveys/?s=LJPMXAMJFYXDLMKL
