🦵 ACL Tear: More than just a sports injury.

An Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear is one of the most well-known knee injuries, particularly in sports that involve sudden changes of direction, jumping, or pivoting. But it can happen to anyone during an awkward landing, twisting movement, or direct impact to the knee.

Common signs of an ACL tear include:
✔️ A popping sensation at the time of injury
✔️ Rapid swelling
✔️ Pain and difficulty walking
✔️ A feeling that the knee is unstable or "giving way"

While ACL injuries can be serious, not everyone requires surgery. The most appropriate treatment depends on factors such as your age, activity level, lifestyle, and future sporting goals.

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in recovery, whether you're managing your injury conservatively or preparing for and recovering from ACL reconstruction. A tailored rehabilitation program can help restore strength, stability, confidence, and safely guide your return to sport or everyday activities.

If you've recently injured your knee or are experiencing instability, don't wait to get it assessed. Early diagnosis and the right management plan can make all the difference in your recovery.

💬 Have you or someone you know recovered from an ACL injury? Share your experience in the comments!

Stay tuned for the next post in our Knee Series as we continue exploring the most common knee injuries and how to recover from them.

Next in our knee series... Meniscus Tears 🦵 : One of the most common knee injuries—but not always one that requires surgery.

The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that cushions and stabilises your knee. A tear can happen suddenly during a twisting movement or develop gradually over time due to normal wear and tear.

Common signs to look out for include:
✅ Pain along the joint line
✅ Swelling
✅ Clicking or catching sensations
✅ Difficulty squatting or twisting
✅ A feeling that your knee is locking or giving way

The good news? Many meniscus tears can be managed successfully with physiotherapy. A personalised rehabilitation program can help reduce pain, improve strength, restore movement, and get you back to the activities you enjoy.

Every tear is different, which is why an accurate assessment is so important. Understanding the type and severity of your injury helps determine whether conservative treatment or further intervention is the best option.

📅 If knee pain is limiting your daily life or preventing you from staying active, book an assessment with one of our physiotherapists. Early treatment can make all the difference.

Stay tuned for the next post in our Knee Series as we continue breaking down the most common knee injuries and how to manage them.

Andre is an ESSA-accredited Exercise Physiologist, having graduated from Victoria University in 2022.

He achieves this through clear goal setting and by adjusting exercise and fitness to the individual, based on scientific evidence and clinical justification.

First of our knee series... Patellofemoral Pain 🦵

This is one of the most common causes of pain at the front of the knee. Despite the nickname "Runner's Knee," you don't have to be a runner to experience it. It can affect anyone, from active gym-goers to people returning to exercise or even those with desk-based jobs.

Common symptoms include:
✅ Pain around or behind the kneecap
✅ Discomfort when climbing stairs or walking downhill
✅ Pain during squats, lunges, or running
✅ Aching after sitting for extended periods

PFPS is often caused by a combination of factors rather than one specific injury.
The good news? Most cases respond very well to physiotherapy.

A tailored rehabilitation program focusing on strength, mobility, movement retraining, and gradual return to activity can significantly reduce pain and help prevent it from returning.

Have you ever experienced ongoing pain at the front of your knee? Don't ignore it—addressing it early can help you stay active and avoid ongoing discomfort.
