A little behind the scenes from a weekend in Melbourne recently

Felicity spent a couple of days mentoring Polestar Pilates students as they continue their Pilates education. Sharing plenty of movement, learning and conversation along the way.

One of the lovely things about teaching is how much you continue to learn yourself. It’s always nice to step outside the clinic, connect with others in the wider Pilates community and come home feeling a little inspired too.

Such a lovely group of people to spend the weekend with.

Breathing in Pilates is a skill, and it's one that makes a real difference once it clicks.
In a Pilates session, you'll hear cues like "inhale to prepare" and "exhale on the effort." That's not arbitrary. The breath pattern is intentional and it's directly connected to how your core activates, how your nervous system responds, and how efficiently your body moves through each exercise.
Lateral breathing is the foundation. On the inhale, the breath expands through the sides and back of the ribcage rather than pushing up into the chest or down into the belly. On the exhale, there's a gentle drawing in through the deep core, which naturally supports stability and control through the movement.
When your breath and movement are connected, exercises feel more purposeful, your core engages more effectively, and your body works as a more coordinated unit.
If you've ever felt like you were holding your breath through the hard parts, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things our instructors help clients work through, and it usually comes together faster than people expect.
Our classes are guided throughout, so you'll always have support in finding that rhythm.

Your core does a lot more than most people realise.

It's not just about sit-ups or a flat stomach. Your core is the foundation your whole body relies on for stability, load management and controlled movement through everyday life and exercise. Sitting, standing, lifting, walking, breathing. Your core is quietly involved in all of it.

When it's underperforming, the rest of your body compensates. That compensation is often where pain, stiffness and reduced function start to show up. The lower back that aches by the afternoon. The posture that collapses without warning. The instability during movement that you've started to accept as just how things are.

This carousel walks through five common signs that your core may need more support and what actually helps.

The good news is that core function responds really well to the right kind of training. Not high-rep crunches or grinding through planks, but intentional, guided movement that teaches your deep stabilising muscles to activate, coordinate and work together properly.
Clinical Pilates, Reformer classes and guided exercise rehab at Bay City Health Group and Bay City Pilates are all structured around exactly this. Every session is informed by a genuine understanding of how the body works, with technique, progression and personalised support built in from the start.

Our instructors and practitioners are there to guide you through every movement, not just watch from the front of the room. Whether you're working through pain, recovering from injury, or simply noticing that your body could feel more stable and supported, there's a pathway here for you.

If any of the signs in this carousel felt familiar, that's worth paying attention to. Core function improves with the right support, and knowing where to start makes all the difference.

Reach out to our team, book an assessment, or come and try a class. We'll help you find the right starting point for where your body is at right now.

If you've been trying to decide between Reformer and Mat Pilates, here's something worth knowing. Both are genuinely good. They just offer different things.

Mat Pilates is foundational and accessible. It builds deep core strength, postural control and body awareness using nothing but your own bodyweight. It's challenging in the best way and the skills it develops carry over into everything else you do.

Reformer Pilates layers resistance and range on top of that foundation. The spring-based system supports your body through movement while also challenging it, making it effective for building strength, mobility and control across a wider variety of exercises.

The right choice really comes down to where your body is at, what your goals are, and what kind of environment you move best in. Some people love the simplicity of Mat.

Others love the feedback and variety of the Reformer. A lot of people benefit from both.

At Bay City we offer Mat, Reformer and Clinical Pilates, all guided by an allied-health-informed team who can help you work out the right starting point and progress from there.

Not sure which suits you? Reach out and we'll help you work it out!
