Taluna Horse Olympics! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ…

Each family member chose a horse and guided them through a fun obstacle course designed to build trust, confidence, and help desensitise the horses to new experiences. Together they navigated poles, bounced a ball, put on a โ€œscaryโ€ jacket, crossed the โ€œRaging Riverโ€ tarp, used a pool noodle for gentle touch, and carried a flag across the finish line! ๐Ÿšฉ

The challenge wasnโ€™t about speed, it was about staying calm, confident, and being a leader the horses could trust. Even though the videos are sped up, you can see how relaxed the horses remained. Luna was a little unsure at one point, but Jake stayed calm and confident, and she found the courage to follow him through. ๐Ÿ’›

It was such a fun activity that had everyone involved and working together.

What a fun family session today at Taluna Connections! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’š

Josh, Jake, Mum and Dad joined Tallon, Luna, Cuddles and Apples for a horse treat experiment. Everyone predicted which treat each horse would choose first before offering a selection of peanut butter pretzels, cherry tomatoes, capsicum, carrot, licorice and apple. It was a great way to explore observation, probability and teamwork.

Jake did a fantastic job tallying the results, and Tallon kept everyone laughing by repeatedly untying himself and wandering off! ๐Ÿ˜‚

It was wonderful to see the whole family learning, laughing and connecting together through the horses.

A session full of fun, learning, and connection! ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿด

Today Josh tried his hand at roping a dummy cow with a lariat, building focus, hand-eye coordination, patience, and emotional regulation along the way. Even Dad joined in for a few throws!

We also spent time with Apples, working on trick training and liberty, using body language, energy, and clear communication to strengthen connection and trust.

The best part? It all feels like fun while building confidence and valuable life skills. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿด Horses donโ€™t see a diagnosis, a disability, a job title or a bank balance.

They simply respond to the person standing in front of them.

Their ability to keep us grounded in the present moment can help foster confidence, emotional regulation, resilience and genuine connection.

Thatโ€™s why I created Taluna Connections.

If youโ€™ve ever wondered how meaningful ground-based equine experiences can make a difference, Iโ€™d love to chat. ๐Ÿค

Josh & Luna ๐Ÿด

Josh had a fantastic session this week, enjoying a long walk with Luna through the back paddock, exploring hills, mud, and water along the way. He showed great confidence, calm leadership, and emotional regulation throughout the session, with Luna responding beautifully and matching her pace to his.

Josh also practised backing exercises and used his body language effectively to communicate with Luna, continuing to build trust and connection. We had some great conversations about personal goals, confidence, and working towards getting his learnerโ€™s licence.

A wonderful session, and another step towards our goal of taking the horses on longer walks through the forestry trails. Well done, Josh! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŒŸJacob enjoyed another great session with Luna this week. Through grooming, leading over obstacles, groundwork, and a paddock walk, he practised spatial awareness, confident body language, calm leadership, emotional regulation, and safe horse handling skills. Jacob also worked on using gentle pressure and release to communicate clearly with Luna while maintaining appropriate personal space. His sweet conversations with Luna throughout the session showed the lovely bond, trust, and connection they continue to build together.

๐ŸŒŸ Sarah had a wonderful session this week with Apples!

Using small pieces of zucchini and celery as healthy rewards, Sarah began teaching Apples the foundations of a smile cue and head nod. Trick training is a fun way to develop fine motor skills, coordination, focus, and emotional regulation while strengthening the bond between horse and participant.

Sarah also loves working alongside Apples from her powered wheelchair and, of course, saying hello to Talon and Luna during her visits. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’š
