Having blood taken or a cannula inserted can be a distressing experience.
Thanks to a generous $10,000 donation, the Monash Children’s Clinical Trials Centre now has a tool to help nurses identify the best available vein before a needle is used, reducing the number of attempts, the procedure time and discomfort.
The AccuVein device is a handheld tool that projects a real-time map of a child's veins directly onto their skin using near-infrared light.
‘I found it a really useful tool for children who were a bit nervous or had procedural anxiety — giving them the opportunity for us to look for their veins together and even choose the site,’ shared one of our nurses.
The device is proving especially beneficial in the care of children with procedural anxiety, including autistic children or those with intellectual disability, or difficult-to-find veins.
We're grateful to the Friends of the Children Foundation for making this purchase possible, via the Monash Health Foundation.
Every child who comes through our doors deserves the most comfortable experience we can give them.
