Ever coughed while getting your ears cleaned? You’re not imagining things.

It’s called Arnold’s nerve reflex (the ear-cough reflex). The skin of the ear canal shares a nerve pathway with the vagus nerve, which also controls your cough response. Stimulate one, and the other can fire too, all the way from your ear.

It’s a great reminder of how connected our body’s nerve pathways really are, and why gentle, careful technique matters during every ear examination.

Children’s hearing can change quickly, and even a mild or temporary hearing loss can affect speech, learning and confidence at school.

Signs worth checking:
🔹 Frequently asking you to repeat yourself
🔹 Turning the TV or iPad volume right up
🔹 Speech or language delays
🔹 Trouble following instructions, especially in noisy places
🔹 Recurring ear infections or a history of glue ear

The good news? A children’s hearing test is gentle, play-based and completely painless. We check how well the ears are working and whether anything, like fluid behind the eardrum, might be getting in the way.
