Shoulder Dislocation: More Than “Just Popping It Back In”

A dislocated shoulder can happen in seconds — during sport, a fall, at the gym or even from a simple accident. But proper assessment and follow-up care are important to help prevent ongoing pain, weakness and repeat dislocations.

Common signs of a shoulder dislocation include:
Severe shoulder pain
Visible deformity
Inability to move the arm
Swelling or bruising
Tingling or numbness

After the shoulder is relocated, recovery doesn’t stop there. Some patients may also have associated injuries such as ligament tears, fractures or instability that need ongoing management.

Early treatment, imaging and rehabilitation can make a big difference to recovery and help reduce the risk of future dislocations.

At Balance Fracture Clinic, we provide assessment, fracture and injury management, and ongoing care to support your recovery and return to activity.

From backslab to waterproof cast.

Photo 1:
After the injury, a backslab (half cast) was applied and secured with a bandage. This allows room for swelling while still protecting the fracture during the early stages of healing.

Photo 2:
Because of the fracture pattern and the importance of maintaining alignment, we reinforced the backslab with fibreglass. This provided extra stability and helped prevent displacement while the fracture began to heal.

Photo 3:
Once the fracture was stable, the backslab was removed and replaced with a waterproof cast for the remainder of the healing journey. More comfort, easier hygiene, and no worries around water exposure.

Next step: cast removal and back to normal activities! 🎉
