Understanding your genetic screening options can help you feel more informed and supported when planning for pregnancy, or growing your family.

Some of the more commonly screened genetic conditions include:
• Cystic fibrosis
• Spinal muscular atrophy
• Fragile X syndrome

Our team is here to talk you through what these conditions are, how screening works, and the options available to you.

The goal is simple - clear information and support to help you make informed decisions at every stage.

Early ovarian cancer often doesn’t present with obvious symptoms- which is why it can be missed in its initial stages.

In this reel, we explain where ultrasound comes in, how it’s used in assessing symptoms, and its role in early investigation.

This is about recognising when something isn’t quite right- and knowing when to look into it further.

You might not need to arrive for your ultrasound with a painfully full bladder anymore.

For years, patients were told to drink large amounts of water before obstetric and gynaecology ultrasounds, but modern imaging technology is changing that experience.

Our latest blog explains:

✔️ Why full bladders were once required
✔️ How advanced ultrasound technology has improved image quality
✔️ When transvaginal ultrasound provides clearer detail
✔️ Why many scans are now more comfortable and tailored to the patient

The key shift is this: Better imaging no longer has to mean unnecessary discomfort.

Genetic testing isn’t about predicting your baby’s future - it’s about understanding your options early.

In this video, we break down how it can shape your pregnancy journey, what it can (and can’t) tell you, and why timing matters more than most people realise.

Knowledge creates clarity, confidence, and choice.

3D ultrasound plays an important role in fertility planning and investigating causes of infertility. It allows a detailed assessment of the uterus and ovaries, helping provide valuable information for your treating doctor.

Most fertility scans are performed vaginally to ensure the clearest and most accurate images. While this may feel slightly uncomfortable for some patients, it should not be painful.

During the scan, we assess the uterus, its lining, cavity shape, and the ovaries. This helps identify whether these structures are present, well-formed, and positioned as expected. It can also highlight variations in uterine shape or lining that may affect fertility or pregnancy outcomes.

A 3D ultrasound provides an added layer of detail compared to standard 2D imaging, helping detect uterine anomalies that may otherwise be missed.

We also perform a follicle count to help assess ovarian reserve, along with evaluating the position and appearance of the ovaries.

Non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS), also known as cell-free fetal DNA (cfDNA) testing, is an option available during pregnancy to provide more information about your baby.

A simple blood test from the mother allows small fragments of DNA from the baby's placenta to be analysed. This can help detect an increased chance of certain chromosomal conditions, most commonly an extra copy of chromosome 21, which is associated with Down syndrome (Trisomy 21).

The test can also assess other chromosomes, including the s*x chromosomes—meaning it may determine fetal s*x if you choose to know.

More advanced NIPS can now evaluate additional chromosomes and other genetic regions that are associated with rarer conditions.

It’s a non-invasive option that provides additional insight to support informed discussions with your healthcare team during pregnancy.

For certain ultrasounds, a full bladder helps act as a “window” that allows sound waves to travel more effectively, helping produce clearer images of the pelvic organs and early pregnancy structures. It can also help gently move bowel away from the area being examined, improving visibility during the scan.

The good news? With today’s advanced ultrasound technology and specialist imaging techniques, many obstetric and gynaecology scans no longer require the uncomfortable “water loading” patients remember from years ago.

That said, some scans still benefit from a partially full bladder — which is why preparation instructions are always tailored specifically to your appointment.

Our goal is simple: Accurate imaging with the most comfortable experience possible.
