Dr Kerrie Aust has been recognised for her outstanding leadership and dedication to the wellbeing of doctors and medical students — including her work as medical director of Drs4Drs, supporting medical professionals with safe, confidential and compassionate care.

A tireless advocate for doctors’ health and women in leadership, Dr Aust’s contribution continues to make a lasting impact across the medical profession.

As Australia’s first urologist to exclusively sub-specialise in female and functional urology — and South Australia’s first female urologist — Dr Samantha Pillay has spent more than two decades championing women’s health, breaking the stigma around incontinence, and advancing gender equity in medicine.

From building patient education resources used around the world to mentoring future doctors and inspiring girls to see themselves in STEM, Dr Pillay’s impact reaches far beyond the consulting room.

Today my father would have turned 100. He came to Australia in 1948 to study medicine at the University of Adelaide.

He graduated in 1955 and worked in England, Scotland, Malaya and Singapore before coming back to Australia. The clipping is from January 1962. Minyip, in the Wimmera, population 800, ten beds. He was the only doctor. My English mother was only 23, and her family were in the UK, when travel to Australia meant weeks on a boat.

Before I was born, they returned to Adelaide and built a house in Paradise, an Italian area surrounded by market gardens that are now houses. He learnt Italian and looked after the local migrant Italian community, at a time when almost no GP in Adelaide spoke Italian. We were often paid in produce, more than we could eat.

He practised at Glynde for 55 years. Patients have told me he delivered them, and that he delivered their mother.

He worked seven days a week. I do not recall a single day, Christmas included, without home visits. His patients knew they could ask him to come to their house, and at the end of a long clinic he would go, coming home to eat after everyone else, or eating with us and heading out again.

He operated at Modbury and North Eastern Community Hospital when GPs still did obstetrics, hernias, appendicectomies and tonsillectomies.

He was still going to hospital grand rounds in his eighties. He never stopped learning, a habit I gratefully inherited.

He died nine years ago. People still stop me to tell me what he did for their family. Recently a woman I have never met messaged me to ask whether her childhood doctor was my father. She wanted me to know she was still grateful for the care he gave her family.

His grandson is now the third generation of our family to study medicine at Adelaide University, 78 years after my father arrived.

A note on the clipping. He was Sri Lankan. His parents had migrated from Sri Lanka to Malaysia. And for anyone doing the arithmetic, the paper had his age a year out.

Congratulations to Dr Samantha Pillay on being named a 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
This honour recognizes her 40-year connection with the University and her dedication to improving patient quality of life, both through her surgical practice here in Adelaide and her global educational resources. A well-deserved achievement.

Next year will mark 40 years since I walked through the University of Adelaide gates.

Back then, I was searching for answers on microfiche in the Barr Smith Library. I never imagined that today, alongside my work as a surgeon, I would be using Artificial Intelligence to create films, music, and digital twin avatars.

Last night, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from The University of Adelaide was a powerful moment of reflection.

I am grateful that my journey has expanded my impact. As a surgeon, I impact people's lives one-by-one. But through the Inspirational Careers for Kids picture books and , I impact people globally.

Why books? To challenge gender stereotypes and build self-belief in the early years. Why film? To give voice to stories that wouldn't normally be available to cinematic storytelling.

Cinema is no longer just entertainment; it is a vital tool for education and empathy.

💧 World Continence Week | 16–22 June 💧

23 years ago, I set out to create a centre of excellence focused on the management of urinary incontinence — a space where patients and health professionals could access practical, reliable, and educational resources. At the time, there was very little accessible information in this space, and it was clear that the stigma surrounding incontinence was holding people back from seeking help.

So, I built Continence Matters — a website designed to empower patients and equip health professionals. Over the years, the site has grown far beyond what I imagined. Today, it offers:
📄 Free downloadable information sheets
🎥 Short educational videos on common bladder conditions
👩‍⚕️ Clinical support tools and learning materials for health professionals
🧠 Evidence-based case studies and guidance for education

Last year, the website received over 74,000 visits, with people from around the world accessing the content 24 hours a day.

As we mark World Continence Week, I’m proud to have contributed to improving education and awareness about urinary incontinence — a condition that affects 1 in 4 adults but is still too often misunderstood and untreated.

Let’s keep working to break the stigma, improve access to care, and ensure continence care is part of the health conversation — every week of the year.
