With the upcoming release of Toy Story 5 this week, we thought we would look at one of the beloved characters.
Not only are Mr and Mrs Potato Head well recognised and loved, but they are one of your Speechies best friends for therapy. Here are some of the ways we use 🥔Heads.
đź’šrequesting - "I want ____"
đź’ś learning basic body parts - arms, feet, eyes, nose
đź’švocabulary development - "what does he need to hear with?"
đź’śproblem solving - "oh no, he's falling over what does he need to stand up?"
đź’šimaginative play - what will the Potato Heads get up to today - cook, climb a tower?"
đź’śbeing able to be flexible - how do we feel about his arm coming out of where his nose should be? Crazy looking potato heads are the best fun as it creates conversation.

Do you have a potato head at home, you could get creative with?

On Wednesdays Michelle has started supporting the Gan Gan Family Centre's "Talk Play Connect Program", in conjunction with Birubi Point Preschool Educators. The program runs weekly from 1.30-2.30pm and is a great time to connect and engage in play based learning activities to promote speech, langauge, connection and school readiness skills. Thankyou to Gan Gan SACs for inviting Early Start to be part of this amazing project. Looking forward to sharing our fun!

In this current crazy space of being a therapist, we CHOOSE KINDNESS .
Last Thursday Esther could see that Hannah was about to start rocking in the corner from the to do list she was rehersing out loud.
"Would you like me to get you a coffee Han?"
**coffee is how your therapists survive at Early Start, that and chocolate and crumb pastries**
"Oh Esther that would be great, are you getting one?" Han responded.
"No, I dont need one, I can just see that you need one, so I am happy to go get you one"
Our team is just the best at seeing each other, supporting each other and looking out for one another. đź’śđź’š

Some of Tab's favourite clinic resources are from Orchard Toys and she's forever on the look out for them in the Aldi middle aisle. The giant snakes and ladders has been a great introduction for some of her kiddos to a board game that can be unpredictable and is based on luck. This can be a hard concept for many of our kids to learn and can create big emotions when it comes to winning and losing.
With support and language scaffolding, there have been some really great conversations around helping our bodies through the big emotion of losing, how to 'be a good sport' and learning that we can enjoy a game even when it hasn't gone our way.

Last week Esther went back to simple therapy ideas with the basics of cued articulation and speech sounds. They used used stamps, colouring in and playdough to practice the "h" sound with a little owl!
Not everything we do needs to be complicated or tricky; sometimes kids love the simplest of ideas and sometimes as therapists we over think what we are preparing for our kids. This was a highly successful session with lots of practice trials!!

Today is National Sorry Day. "From Sorry to Action". This year highlights that while the historic apology and acknowledging past truths are critical, urgent and concrete action is needed to deliver justice to Stolen Generations survivors and fully implement the outstanding recommendations of 1997 original 'brining them home' report.

Friday Funny
Esther got tricked this week into picking up 15 UNO cards against a school aged client. He got so excited and laughed so hard he almost cried, and said it was the highlight of his week.

MEET THE TEAM SHELL
I've had so much fun writing these bios for everyone else, it's now come to me, and it's really hard to write about yourself.. so here goes.
For those who don't know the story, I purchased Early Start in 2009 from my supervisor and mentor I had, as an eager 4th year student in 2003 at Forster community health centre (shout out to Rach!) and now today, I still love coming to work every day, hanging out with my fabulous crew of ladies and my wonderful clients. Early Start is a clinic that has been around for a long time and we have no intention of it going anywhere soon, no matter how doom and gloom the future is.
Early Start is a clinic you can trust and feel like you are listened to and supported. Where your children will make growth, change and thrive and love coming to their speech lessons. I love seeing and hearing stories of my old clients now thriving in highschool or public speaking requirements. I love being part of their story, knowing that Early Intervention was the key.
When not thinking about my clients, or what the team's next PD session will be about, or when not researching the changes to NDIS and how it may affect us, you will find Shell at the beach or in nature somewhere, with her two beautiful crazy boys and husband Mitch.
