.. aaand it’s Cold Season again ..

Now that the weather is cooling down and we experience a greater temperature span between day and night, it’s sneezing and coughing season again..

What can Chinese medicine offer?
Acupuncture points for acute Cold invasion focusses on driving out ‘pathogenic Winds’ – and strengthening your Wei Qi (defensive energy). These are mostly points on the upper back (Lung area), and around wrists and ankles.
Chinese herbal medicine has two major lines of defence.
1- Yin Qiao San is a phantastic formula that is indicated when the main symptoms are a sore throat, Headache, and a mild fever.

2- Sang Ju Yin is the go-to formula when the main symptom is a cough (there might still be a bit of a scratchy throat).
These formulas work best when taken withing 24h of onset of symptoms.

Headaches? – no need to cut off your head ..

Gentle acupuncture needling can go a long way to release that stagnation in your head that causes your headaches.
Depending on the nature (dull, sharp, throbbing) and the location (back, front, side of your head), different acupuncture channels are affected and must be released accordingly.
The time in between your headaches is then an opportunity to understand triggers and make your body more resistant to attacks. 🥰

Feeling lost, indecisive, shy, or easily overwhelmed?

Then it is likely that your Gallbladder channel (GB) is out of whack.

The channel that is responsible for decision-making and determination is also very important for all kinds of physical symptoms. Just look where along the body it runs: from your eyes to your ear, down the side of your body until it reaches your ring toe.
As a result, the GB is used for a vast amount of problems:
- Emotions (suppressed emotions, timidity, indecisiveness)
- Glutes (tension, sciatica)
- Organ issues (eyes, ears, liver, gallbladder)
- TMJ (grinding/ clenching of teeth)
- Headaches (especially temporal HA, migraine)
- Joints and bones (Neck, Hip, foot). the list literally goes on and on ..

Pericardium Channel – Protector of your Heart and your Emotions

If your body were a chess game with the Heart being King, the Pericardium (PC) is its Queen. So it is not overly astonishing that when you present with Heart symptoms (either the organ directly or emotional), some of the most relevant acupuncture points lie on the Pericardium channel.
This channel also connects emotions to the digestive system (the proverbial “I can’t stomach this..”).

The PC is used with:
- insomnia, anxiety
- nausea, motion sickness, gastritis
- Palpitations, chest pain/ tightness

Western Medicine interpretation:
A significant part of the PC’s functions can be interpreted as following the brain-gut axis.

Chinese medical clock: PC is indicated when symptoms regularly get worse between 7pm and 9pm.

The Triple Burner (TB) channel, a Fire channel, is not linked to an organ, but to the whole fluid and energy system in the body. It connects the other organs to work together harmoniously. It is divided into three (triple) levels, the upper (respiratory, blood circulation), middle (digestion), and lower (elimination, fertility) level.
It is associated with fluids and energy circulation and therefore works on:
- metabolism (i.e. swelling, itching)
- urinary tract
- fertility
- organ support (i.e. Lung, Heart, Stomach, Large Intestine problems)
Western Medicine: the TB's function is closest to the Vagus Nerve.
Chinese medical clock: TB is indicated when symptoms regularly get worse between 9pm and 11pm.

Happy Chinese New Year! 🎉

The Year of the Fire Horse – get ready for a rare combination of a Yang-Fire year thrown together with the horse element, which is based on heat and passion as well!
From a health perspective, this means a lot of additional energy – make sure that it is directed towards a positive outlet and does not affect sleep, mental & digestive health.
As always, you are the boss of your own health and choices, you decide! ❤️

Plantar Fasciitis

That excruciating pain can be at the center, inside, or outer side of your heel. Heel spurs (little calcium deposits), or an inflammation of the plantar fascia, that fibrous tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes are possible causes.
Electroacupuncture is a great way to release Qi & Blood Stagnation that causes this sharp pain.
The ideal treatment will start from the calf, as it holds a lot of tension and pulls the heel upwards via the Achilles tendon, and work your way down to the heel.

TMJ - Clenching your Teeth

Clenching or grinding your teeth is a classical stress response (Qi Stagnation); Especially when you are asleep, your body tries to – literally – chew your problems away. So, work on this Qi Stagnation!
There are some amazing local and distal acupuncture points that can help relieve that Stagnation. You can enhance that treatment with a Qi-moving herbal formula.
But also: massage your face, learn your areas of pain, put some oil on your fingertips, and gently massage your masseter muscle (the big muscle on your jaw) while slowly opening and closing your mouth. You will find several other pain points surrounding your temporomandibular joint. Losen them up regularly. Increase your exercising to release some of your pent-up energy, and drink water with lemon or apple cider vinegar.

Back Pain and Acupuncture

Do you suffer from a stabbing pain between your shoulder blades? Or a niggling sensation in your lumbar area? Back pain can take up so many different shapes and forms.

In Chinese medicine, back pain is either a stagnation of Qi (Energy) and Blood, or a deficiency. Location and type of pain, reaction to heat or cold, duration (chronic or acute pain) can tell you a lot about the origin of the problem.

(Electro-)acupuncture, cupping, sometimes moxa, and even herbal formulas can help moving that stagnation and nourish and tonify the affected area.
