Today, we celebrated the Feast Day of Mary Aikenhead, whose vision of compassionate care continues to inspire our mission at the Mater. Staff, volunteers and visitors gathered for a special Mass this morning, followed by a lunch in the Healing Garden.

In 1834, Mary Aikenhead founded St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, dedicated to caring for all those who were sick and poor. More than 190 years later, her legacy lives on through the dedication, kindness and service shown by our teams every day.

As we continue her mission, we also celebrate and elevate the incredible work our Mater staff do in delivering exceptional patient care and strengthening the legacy of compassion she began. Thank you to all who continue her mission of caring with love, dignity and compassion.

A remarkable milestone, celebrated at The Mater Hospital Sydney. 💜

Baby Amelia’s arrival has been recognised as occurring just as Australia's population ticked over to 28 million people.

While the milestone has captured national attention, for her family it represents something far more personal: the beginning of a new life and a new chapter together.

We are proud that The Mater Hospital Sydney could play a part in this special moment and congratulate Amelia, mum Diana and dad Jack on their exciting arrival.

Today on International Allied Health Professions Day, we’re celebrating the people who help our patients regain strength, confidence and independence.

It's also the perfect opportunity to introduce Brittany, our newly appointed Allied Health Manager, who has been part of the Mater family for the past year and brings over a decade of physiotherapy experience.

Her passion? Orthopaedic rehabilitation: helping patients get back on their feet after injury or surgery and supporting them through every milestone of recovery.

At St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, our Emergency Department includes a dedicated Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Hub - an integrated, specialist-led service providing immediate support to people in crisis.

This collaborative model brings together emergency clinicians, mental health specialists, and AOD teams to offer trauma-informed, person-centred care when it’s needed most. “We see people from all walks of life and treat everyone with respect,” says Emergency Nurse Olivia Bollington. “We listen and involve them in their care.”

The average length of stay for those attending the Hub is 40 per cent shorter than the average length of stay they would have experienced in our ED as part of the general mix of patients.

It’s part of a national St Vincent’s commitment to caring for people experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, and disadvantage - across our hospitals, outreach teams and digital services.

This Pain Week, we’re sharing the story of Navy veteran Ashley Semmens - who lived with chronic pain for over a decade after a bomb blast in Afghanistan.

With support from pain medicine specialist Dr Ramsey Jabbour at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, Ashley underwent a targeted treatment called radiofrequency ablation - and for the first time in years, found meaningful relief.

Ashley then went on to achieve a world-first: crossing the English Channel swimming on his back using only his legs.

His story is a powerful reminder that evidence-based pain care can transform lives.
