Never Stop Learning. 🤍

I spent the weekend in Melbourne completing a Vocal Manual Therapy course at Performance Medicine.

One of the things I love most about working in voice is that there is always more to learn. Every opportunity to continue learning helps me better support the students, clients and performers who trust me with their voices.

Just as valuable as the course itself was the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and meet passionate vocal coaches and speech pathologists from across Australia. Although we all brought different experiences and perspectives, we shared a common goal - to better understand the voice and continue providing the best possible care and training for the people we support.

I truly believe our profession is stronger when we learn together. Sharing knowledge, asking questions and remaining curious not only strengthens us as professionals, but ultimately benefits every singer, speaker and performer who walks through our doors.

A heartfelt thank you to Annie Strauch (she/her) for facilitating such an engaging and inspiring weekend. Your passion for this work, generosity in sharing your knowledge, and the incredible community you’ve built through Performance Medicine are truly inspiring. Thank you for creating a space where we can continue learning from one another.

I’m back in Adelaide feeling inspired, grateful, and excited to begin integrating what I’ve learned into my clinical practice.

As usual, I was so busy learning (and chatting! 🤣) that I forgot to take more photos… so this mini photo dump will have to do.

Your voice is one of the most powerful parts of your personal brand.

Before people remember what you said, they’ll often remember how you said it.

Your voice communicates far more than words alone. It can convey confidence, credibility, warmth, authority, empathy and authenticity.

Whether you’re leading a meeting, presenting to a room, interviewing for a new role, pitching an idea or simply introducing yourself, your voice influences the way others experience you.

The good news? These skills aren’t fixed.

Like any professional skill, your voice can be developed. With the right training, you can learn to communicate with greater confidence, clarity and presence, without losing what makes you uniquely you.

What if taking a break actually helped your voice? 🤍

It might sound counterintuitive, but from a motor learning perspective, learning doesn’t stop when practice ends.

When we’re learning a new vocal skill, whether that’s reducing muscle tension, improving breath coordination, developing resonance or changing an old vocal habit - our brains continue to process and strengthen those new movement patterns between practice sessions. This process is known as motor memory consolidation.

Recovery also gives our vocal tissues, muscles and nervous system an opportunity to recover from load, helping us return to practice feeling more efficient, focused and responsive.

This doesn’t mean we stop practising.

It means recognising that quality practice, combined with appropriate recovery, is often more effective than constantly pushing through fatigue.

So if you’re taking some time to recharge these holidays, don’t feel guilty.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your voice is to pause, breathe, and trust the learning process.

That’s exactly what I’ll be doing for the rest of this week. 🦭🌊

🍎 Teachers, how is your voice feeling after another busy term?

The school holidays are a valuable opportunity to reset - not just mentally, but vocally.

Teaching places significant demands on your voice every day. If you’ve noticed hoarseness, vocal fatigue, throat discomfort or that your voice feels harder to use by the end of the day, these are signs that your voice may benefit from some care.

Over the holidays, try to:
• 💧 Stay well hydrated
• 😴 Prioritise quality sleep
• 🗣️ Reduce unnecessary vocal load where you can
• 🌿 Manage reflux or allergies if they affect your voice
• ⏸️ Give your voice regular breaks throughout the day

If your voice is still hoarse, tired or strained after several days away from the classroom, it may be worth seeking a professional voice assessment rather than simply hoping it improves next term.

At Vocolove, we support teachers and other professional voice users to build healthy, sustainable voices for the classroom.

Your voice is one of your most valuable teaching tools - make sure you give it some love! 🗣️🤍

A child’s voice is constantly growing, changing and adapting.

For young singers, actors and performers, that voice is often working even harder across rehearsals, performances, school and everyday life.

When voice changes become ongoing, it’s easy to assume they’ll simply “grow out of it.” Sometimes they do, but persistent hoarseness, vocal fatigue or changes in voice quality deserve a closer look.

At Vocolove, every assessment looks beyond the voice itself. We take the time to understand the whole picture - including how a child uses their voice, their performance demands, overall health and any other factors that may be influencing their voice.

Because every child is unique, every therapy plan is too.

Our goal is to help children develop healthy, efficient and sustainable voice use - so they can continue singing, performing and communicating with confidence.

If you’ve noticed ongoing changes in your child’s voice, early assessment can make a real difference.

For a long time, people assumed Vocolove was just for singers.

The truth is, I’ve always believed every voice has a story.

Some of my clients are preparing for auditions or performances. Others rely on their voice every day as teachers, leaders, healthcare workers or fitness instructors. Some are navigating voice changes or returning to the activities they love. And some are just beginning their journey through Young Voices.

Different people.
Different goals.
One thing in common.

A voice that deserves to be heard, cared for and understood.

No matter where you are in your journey, you’re welcome here.

I had a gig last night (4 sets!) and my voice is in need of some rest and recovery. Sunday mornings are always my little vocal reset.

Nothing fancy - just a slower morning, lots of water, a caffeine free roobios tea, some gentle straw phonation and trying not to overdo the talking.

As singers, we spend so much time thinking about warming up, but recovery is just as important. Your voice does a lot of work, so giving it time to recharge can make all the difference.

Happy Sunday to all my fellow weekend performers. Hope you’re giving your voice a little love today. 🤍
