After a stroke, the thought “if I fall, I won’t be able to catch myself” can follow you into every step. So you hold onto something, take fewer steps, and stop practising sooner than you meant to.

That caution makes complete sense. The trouble is you end up with less walking practice, when the Australian stroke guidelines recommend practising walking as much as possible.

Our Liverpool and Moonah clinics are the only two Optimum clinics with a LiteGait, and it gives you a way to keep practising. It’s an overhead frame and body support that takes some of your weight while you step, on a treadmill or in the rehab gym, with your Physiotherapist working beside you.

Optimum’s Physiotherapists set how much of your weight the frame takes and adjust it as your sessions go on.

It isn’t the right fit for everyone, so your Physiotherapist will decide with you at an assessment whether it suits you.

You don’t need a GP referral to book: call 1800 678 647 or use the link in the comments.

Your most-worn pair of shoes is worth bringing to your Podiatry appointment. The way the soles have worn down shows your Podiatrist how you stand and walk, and which parts of the shoe take the most load.

In a footwear assessment, Optimum’s Podiatrists look at your feet, your shoes and the way you walk, then talk through what a normal week looks like for you at work, school or sport. For some people the answer is simply a different pair of shoes. If your assessment shows an orthotic is likely to help, your Podiatrist can fit one and pair it with footwear advice and a few simple exercises.

For kids, bring their school shoes as well as whatever they wear most on weekends, and we’ll give you a few things to look for the next time you’re shoe shopping.

NDIS participants don’t need a GP referral for NDIS-funded Podiatry.

Today is Allied Health Professions Day, and we want to say thank you to every one of Optimum’s practitioners.

This year’s theme is “Allied health: For everyone, everywhere”, and it’s a good description of where our team works. Optimum’s Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Exercise Physiologists, Dietitians, Podiatrists and Behaviour Support practitioners see people in 14 clinics across NSW and Tas, and just as often in their homes, at school, out in the community and on telehealth.

To our team, thank you for the care you bring to every one of those places. We’re proud to work alongside you.

Heather is 81 and leg pressing 45kg with ease!

A lot of us grew up hearing that getting older means "taking it easy", and plenty of us have said the same thing to our own parents. Heather's session in Hobart is a good reminder that building strength belongs to every stage of life, not just your twenties.

That's what Exercise Physiology is for. Optimum's Exercise Physiologists can start with a strength, balance and mobility assessment, then build a program around strength, confidence and independence that starts from where you are, whatever your age.

When a person with intellectual disability finds it hard to say "I'm in pain", "I'm exhausted" or "this is too loud", the message can come out through their behaviour instead.

Pain, poor sleep, low mood, a change in routine or a sensory overload can all sit behind behaviours of concern, and most of them are hard to see from across the room.

If a plan only targets the behaviour, the reason behind it is still there.

Optimum's Behaviour Support Practitioners start by getting to know the person, then look to understand what sits underneath through a Functional Behaviour Assessment. The plan that follows is written so the person, their family, carers and support workers can use it together, at home, at school, in the community or in the clinic.

We work with children and adults with intellectual disability across NSW and Tas, funded through Capacity Building in an NDIS plan or paid privately.

Would it help to talk it through?

Before Optimum's Occupational Therapists recommend a powered wheelchair or custom seating, you get to try the options first. Equipment that looks right in a brochure can still be the wrong fit for your body, your routine or your home. A trial is how you find that out before anything is recommended.

Your first appointment is mostly about getting to know you and your day, including what you'd like to do more easily or more safely and where your current setup gets in the way. From there, we organise trials with suppliers so you can test the equipment in real settings, and we can come to your home when that helps.

We note what worked and what didn't, and we listen to your view, because you're the one who'll be using it. All of that goes into the assessment report, which sets out the reasons behind each recommendation. For the NDIS and most funders, that report and the supplier quotes are what get the equipment approved.

Simple, low-cost items can move faster, and if you're an NDIS participant you can often buy them straight from your plan.

We see NDIS participants and private clients across our clinics in NSW and Tas. Call us on 1800 678 647 to book an assessment, or tap the link in the comments.

Wondering whether something "counts" as assistive technology? It probably does. Assistive technology is anything that helps you do a task you find hard, or do it more safely, and it runs from a rail beside the shower through to a powered wheelchair, custom seating or a communication device.

Where an item sits on that range changes how you get it. If you're an NDIS participant, you can often buy simple, low-cost items straight from your plan without a long report. Higher-cost equipment usually needs a written assessment from an Occupational Therapist, plus supplier quotes, before it's funded.

Optimum's Occupational Therapists start with the tasks that matter to you, then organise trials with suppliers so you can test equipment in real settings before anything is recommended. For communication devices, our Speech Pathologists assess the options, and an Occupational Therapist works alongside them on how you reach and use the device.

We see NDIS participants and private clients across our clinics in NSW and Tas, and we can come to your home when that helps the assessment. If you're not sure how your funding covers it, call us on 1800 678 647 and we'll talk it through before you book, or tap the link in the comments.

Has your GP or paediatrician suggested paediatric physiotherapy for your baby?

Paediatric physiotherapy is physiotherapy for babies, children and adolescents who find movement, strength, coordination or balance harder than they would like. For babies, one common reason is holding their head to one side, which is often a tight neck called torticollis. Another is when rolling, sitting, crawling or walking is taking longer than you expected.

If you're picturing something clinical, a first appointment with Optimum's Physiotherapists is mostly play. They watch how your baby moves, ask what you're noticing and what you'd like to see, and set goals with you from there.

You don't usually need a referral to book. We see children of any age, from newborns to teenagers, in clinic, at home, at school and in the community across NSW and Tas. Families fund sessions through the NDIS, private health extras, or Medicare with a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, which starts with your GP.

You'll find more on our paediatric physiotherapy page through the link in our comments, or you can call us on 1800 678 647.

"Am I actually getting stronger, or am I just doing the exercises?"

If you have been at this a while, you have probably had that thought on the drive home from a session, and had no real way to answer it.

Here is the part that makes it hard. A practitioner watching you squat can see a great deal, and still not see that your right leg is carrying most of it. Sides compensate quietly, and neither of you feels it happening.

So Optimum's Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists measure it as well as watch it. You stand on force plates that read each foot separately, eyes open, then closed, then on one leg. You push and pull against AxIT dynamometers at the joints that matter for what you want to be able to do. Then you squat, lunge and step while the plates record what each leg is carrying.

What comes back is a number rather than an impression: how much force you produced, how fast it built, and which side is doing more of the work.

Next time, the same tests are run the same way. That comparison is what answers the question you had on the drive home.

Testing runs in one appointment at our clinics across NSW and Tas. Most people fund it through the NDIS from Capacity Building, under Improved Daily Living, and Medicare, DVA and private health all work too.

Has "you go ahead, I'll catch up" become a regular line on the walk from the car, for you or someone you care for?

It's a line our Physiotherapists hear often from people living with COPD, bronchiectasis or asthma, and from people whose breathing muscles are affected by conditions like motor neurone disease or muscular dystrophy.

Respiratory Physiotherapy is hands-on and practical. Optimum's Physiotherapists teach airway clearance, like huffing and the active cycle of breathing, along with breathing retraining such as pursed-lip breathing. These are techniques you can practise and use yourself at home. Supervised exercise then works on building your strength and stamina, so everyday activity can start to feel more manageable.

Sessions run in clinic and at home across NSW and Tas. You can book privately with no referral, claim through many private health extras policies, use a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan through Medicare, or use NDIS funding if a significant, permanent disability affects your breathing.

Give us a call on 1800 678 647, or the referral link is in the comments.
