This is a fascinating area of research, but it’s worth flagging that most drug-microbiome-nutrient triads are backed largely by correlational human data, and in some cases the findings are genuinely contested.

What I find most interesting is the overlap. Metformin and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), for example, sit in both categories, they’re linked to nutrient depletion and microbiome disruption. That raises a real question: Is vitamin B12 deficiency on these drugs a direct absorption/pharmacokinetic effect? A downstream consequence of microbiome shifts affecting B12-producing (or competing) flora? Or some combination of both, and if so, in what proportion?

I’m beyond thrilled to finally say…I did it! 🎉

I completed the final requirement, the oral examination in June and I’m officially a Fellow of Australasia College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM)!

It’s been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I honestly can’t put into words how happy and grateful I feel right now. ❤️

Wow. PCOS finally has a new name. After years of debate, the consensus has landed on PMOS for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.

The name change was needed because the so-called "cysts" of "polycystic" are not actual cysts, but really just follicles or eggs, which are normal for the o***y.

What are your thoughts on the new name? As Dr Fiona McCulloch ND points out, it does sound a bit too similar to PMS.

I feel very privileged to have been invited to speak at the Postpartum Care Conference.
The experience reminded me that care shouldn’t just begin after birth — it needs to start much earlier. True wellness begins pre-partum: during preconception and pregnancy.
By supporting women early, we can:
🌱 Minimise nutrient depletion
💊 Address drug–nutrient interactions
🧬 Support biochemical pathways and prevent potential health issues
❤️ Holistic postpartum recovery truly begins before birth.

It’s been an incredible day of learning.
2 take home messages for me:
1. When does postpartum care really start? If we want to protect the health of both mum and bub, it should begin before birth. A healthcare system that prioritises prevention would save countless dollars in the long run, a win for mothers and a win for the health budget.
2. There is a wealth of traditional wisdom we should not overlook.
