August is birthday month in our house.

Two birthdays. Two very different little humans. And every year it reminds me that birthdays aren’t always easy for children.

We often think of birthdays as exciting, but for many kids they’re also full of change, sensory input, waiting, visitors, unexpected moments and big emotions.

As parents, we can spend weeks planning the “perfect” day, only to be met with tears or meltdowns.

That doesn’t mean we’ve done anything wrong.

Sometimes it just means the day became bigger than their brain could manage.

This year, we’re focusing less on making birthdays perfect and more on making them feel safe.

Because that’s what our children remember most.

If your house has felt a little louder, messier or more emotional these school holidays… you’re definitely not alone.

Every holidays I hear parents wondering what happened to their usually settled child.

The truth is, school holidays are a huge shift for little brains. Different routines, extra sensory input, later nights, exciting outings, less downtime and lots of big emotions. It’s the perfect recipe for overwhelm.

Understanding why it happens doesn’t magically stop the meltdowns, but it does help us respond with more compassion and a little less guilt.

You don’t need to fill every day with activities.

Some of the best regulation happens through slow mornings, backyard adventures, reading books together, building cubbies, and simply being alongside your child.

Sometimes less really is more.

I’d love to know… how are the school holidays going in your house? 🤍

To many adults, a play therapy session can look like “just playing.”

But beneath the surface, there’s so much more happening.

Children may be exploring emotions through dolls, processing difficult experiences in the sand tray, practising problem-solving through games, or building confidence one small interaction at a time.

Unlike adults, children often don’t have the words to explain what’s happening inside. Play gives them a developmentally appropriate way to communicate, process and heal.

Every toy has a purpose.
Every interaction is intentional.
Every session is guided by the therapeutic relationship.

Because when children feel safe enough to play, they often begin to show us exactly what they need.

Play is a child’s first language.

Long before children have the words to explain what they’re thinking or feeling, they communicate through play.

Play therapy meets children where they are. Through carefully selected toys, creative activities and a trusting therapeutic relationship, children can safely explore emotions, process difficult experiences, build confidence and develop healthy ways of coping.

It isn’t “just playing.” It’s an evidence-informed therapeutic approach that helps children express what can be difficult to put into words.

Every session is tailored to the child’s unique strengths, needs and developmental stage because no two children experience the world in exactly the same way.

If you’d like to learn more about whether play therapy is the right fit for your child, we’d love to help.

Counselling looks different for every child.

For some, it’s talking. For others, it’s play, stories, games, art, puppets or simply having a safe space where they feel seen and understood.

Through a strong therapeutic relationship, children and teens can learn to understand their emotions, build confidence, develop coping strategies, strengthen relationships and make sense of the challenges they’re experiencing.

Therapy isn’t about changing who a child is. It’s about helping them understand themselves, feel safe enough to grow, and equipping them with skills that support them both now and into the future.

If you’re wondering whether counselling is the right fit for your child or teen, we’re always happy to answer your questions.

Child counselling provides children with a safe, supportive space to explore their thoughts, emotions and experiences. Through evidence-informed, developmentally appropriate approaches, including play, conversation and creative activities, children can build emotional awareness, develop coping strategies, strengthen relationships and increase confidence.

Every child is different, which is why therapy should be tailored to their unique needs, strengths and stage of development.

If you’re wondering whether counselling may benefit your child, we’re always happy to have a conversation.

URGENT NEED – Can you help us restock essentials for kids in care? 💛

One of the questions we hear often from families is:

“What’s the difference between a Developmental Educator and an Occupational Therapist?”

Both roles support children to participate more comfortably in everyday life but they often focus on different areas of development.

An Occupational Therapist (OT) may support things like sensory processing, motor skills, coordination, handwriting and daily living tasks.

A Developmental Educator (DE) often focuses on emotional regulation, social understanding, independence, problem solving and navigating everyday environments like school and community.

There can be overlap, and many children benefit from both supports working together.

The most important thing is finding the supports that best meet your child’s individual needs and developmental goals.

At The Nurtured Village, we work collaboratively with families and other professionals to support the whole child.

Save this post if you’ve ever wondered about the difference.

Ever picked your child up from school only to be met with grumpiness, tears, or complete silence?

You’re not alone — and your child isn’t being “naughty.” Their nervous system is just running on empty.

After a full day of listening, learning, holding it together, and navigating social dynamics, kids often hit their limit. That’s where the HALT tool can help.

💛 HALT = Hungry, Angry/ Anxious, Lonely, Tired.
These unmet needs can trigger emotional dysregulation, especially in sensitive or neurodivergent kids.

Before we label the after-school meltdown as bad behaviour, let’s pause and ask:
👉 Are they hungry?
👉 Are they holding onto some big feelings?
👉 Did they feel disconnected today?
👉 Are they simply exhausted?

When we meet these needs with curiosity and care, we support their nervous system to feel safe again.

📲 Swipe through to learn how the HALT tool can help your child transition gently from school to home.

You’re not a bad parent. They’re not a bad kid. There’s just a need under the behaviour.
