After a recent spike in women coming into the clinic with low-impact fractures, unaware of how significantly menopause affects bone mineral density - we have developed a new service lead by physiotherapist Sarah St Marie called Thrive45+.

Thrive 45+ is an 8-week, small- group physiotherapy program in Ocean Grove designed specifically for women aged 45 and over who present with or are at risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis.

As part of the program we provide initial training in proper weight lifting technique, evidence-based resistance training and impact loading, balance training, and monthly educational nights.

The goal of this preventative program is to help women build strength, gain confidence and knowledge, and take proactive control of their bone health.

Prior to starting the program, I am hosting a free community talk on bone health on August 26th. This will focus on what bone health means as we get older and what we can actually do about it.

If you, or someone dear to you, think you could benefit from attending the educational night or starting the supervised 8-week group, we would love to have you along!

Yours in strong bones and good health!

Still early days for GLA:D Back, but promising early signs across Aus. Will it grow to do for chronic low back pain what the GLA:D Hip and Knee course has done for lower limb osteoarthritis?

Ben Crowe is your local Ocean Grove GLA:D Back Allied Physiotherapist for anyone wishing to explore this further.

We’re excited to share the preliminary results from the 2025 GLA:D Back Australia Annual Report πŸŽ‰

Over the past few years, GLA:D Back has continued to grow across Australia, helping more people access evidence-based care for persistent and recurrent back pain.

Some standout results:
βœ…245 clinicians trained across Australia
βœ…255 participants supported
βœ…39% reduction in average back pain at 3 months
βœ…28% reduction in pain medication use
βœ…74% achieved their personal goals
βœ…8 in 10 participants reported high satisfaction

GLA:D Back combines education, exercise, and practical self-management strategies to support people in taking control of their back pain.

A huge thank you to the clinicians, participants, and supporters helping make this program possible πŸ’™

Rolled your ankle yesterday? Here's what to do today

The first 24-48 hours matter. Follow POLICE, not just RICE:
πŸ›‘οΈ Protect it – avoid weight-bearing if it's sharp or feels unstable
❄️ Ice it – 15-20 min every 2-3 hours (wrap it, don't apply direct to skin)
🩹 Compress it – a light bandage helps keep swelling down
⬆️ Elevate it – above heart height when you're resting
🚢 Move it gently – small circles as tolerated; total rest can slow healing
Still can't put weight through it, or no better after 48 hours? That's when it's worth getting it properly checked β€” an untreated sprain can turn into ongoing instability.
