After years of running surf trips, Cris noticed something uncomfortable: how you surf is exactly how you live.

Cris Mills has run more surf trips than most people have had good swells. We're both CHEK practitioners and we've known each other a long time now — this is one of my favourite conversations we've had.

After years of watching surfers in the water — back to back days, no distractions, nowhere to hide — he started noticing something.

How someone surfs is exactly how they live.

The guy who pulls back on every wave he should take. The one who paddles out angry and wonders why nothing flows. The one who's fit, experienced, knows what to do — and still can't get out of his own way. It's not a surfing problem. It's a whole-life pattern showing up in the water.

Cris calls surfing the ultimate diagnostic tool. Not because it's poetic. Because the ocean strips the performance away. A week on a boat in the Mentawais doesn't lie. Your emotional state, your nervous system, your relationship with pressure — it all surfaces. The body keeps the score, and the surf makes you read it out loud.

Most people chase the physical fix. Shoulder. Paddle fitness. Rotation. But there's a layer underneath that nobody's talking to. And until you do — the pattern just repeats.

Free 6-week surf strength and conditioning program in the bio — because a stronger body with an unaddressed nervous system will only get you so far.

Thank you Gio.

Standing up is the most demanding movement in surfing — and most surfers over 40 are failing it.

This one comes from a conversation with Cris Mills — a guy I've known since around 2014, both of us still out in the water most weeks.

Standing up is the most demanding movement in surfing.

Explosive hip flexion. Rotational stability. Full-body coordination. All in under a second, on an unstable surface, with water everywhere.

Most surfers over 40 are quietly failing it.

Not dramatically — just slower.

Less clean.

That hesitation before you commit.

The shoulder absorbing what the hips should be doing.

The lower back picking up the work your glutes checked out on years ago. You compensate so well you don't notice. Until you do.

Here's what nobody talks about — standing up doesn't create the problem. It reveals it.

The years of sitting, the old injuries, the patterns your body built to protect itself — it all shows up in that one movement.

Leave it long enough, and your nervous system starts to believe that's just who you are now.

It doesn't have to be.

Thank you Gio.

Linten — — has seen this mistake for years.
And once he pointed it out, it made complete sense.

Cones are ruining your surf skate training.
Most coaches don’t realise it.

When you weave through cones, your eyes go down.
Eyes down pushes weight forward.
Weight forward puts you on the nose — and kills your ability to pivot off your back foot.

You’re building a pattern in your driveway that you then have to undo the moment you paddle out.

Surfing is driven by where your eyes go.
Look at the section you want to hit — not the ground.
The body follows the head.
Always.

So if your surf skate practice has your gaze locked on little orange markers, you’re rehearsing the wrong thing.
Over and over.
At speed.
Building confidence in a pattern that works against you.

Try this instead: no cones.
Pick a point at eye level — fence, tree line, anything stable.
Let your eyes drive the turn.
Feel where your weight sits.
That’s closer to what’s actually happening on a wave.

Small thing.
Massive difference.

Thank you Gio.

Three weeks into his tailored program and Archie’s right knee pain is gone.

He’d been dealing with that pain for a year and a half.
Training around it.
Living with it.
Adjusting everything he did because of it.

Once we built a program around his actual pattern — not generic exercises — his knee finally had the chance to settle.
Better movement.
Better load.
Better tissue tolerance.

This is what happens when the work matches the person.

Proud of you, .

Thank you Gio.

Surfers, the spine doesn't work in isolation — and neither does your neck and shoulder pain. There are many spinal conditions, each one provoked by a specific movement or position, and your neck and shoulders sit on top of all of it.

This is why there's no single stretch that fixes it. The wrong exercise for your pattern can quietly make it worse, not better.

If you've been going round in circles — new routine every month, short-term relief, back to square one — the real question isn't which exercise. It's why your whole system keeps landing in the same place, and no one has mapped that for you.

That's where a different point of view starts.

Hippocrates said it first — let food be your medicine.

And it’s still true.

There isn’t a peptide, supplement, or any other hack that can match the consistency of good food choices.

If the foundation isn’t solid, nothing on top will hold.

What’s the point of winning a race if your body falls apart afterwards.

Performance means nothing if the system underneath is breaking down.

Strong nutrition.
Strong tissue.
Strong recovery.
Everything else is secondary.

Thank you Gio.
