When you're hours from the nearest road or definitive care, improvisation can make all the difference.

In this video, we demonstrate how to construct a rope litter stretcher using minimal equipment-an invaluable wilderness skill when a patient needs to be moved safely through remote terrain.

The further you are from help, the more important preparation, teamwork, and practical skills become.

🌿Quick & Easy Wilderness Tips with Kerryn!

Here's a simple tip that can make a huge difference in the bush-stay as dry as possible.

When it's cold and wet outdoors, keeping your layers dry is one of the easiest ways to stay warm and comfortable for longer.

A common mistake - Often occurs stopping for morning tea or lunch. As soon as you stop moving, your body starts to cool down. Most of us remember to throw on an extra layer-but then we sit straight on cold, damp ground, soaking those nice dry layers and allowing the ground to draw heat away from our bodies.

Remember, heat isn't just lost to the air-we lose plenty through the ground too.

A quick fix? Sit on your backpack instead. Even better, carry a lightweight sit mat if you have one. That simple insulating layer between you and the ground helps keep your clothes drier and your body warmer.

It's a small habit that takes seconds, but it can make a big difference to your comfort-and the more comfortable you are, the more you can enjoy your time in the bush.

A bothy bag is one of the most underrated pieces of wilderness safety equipment you can carry! We don't say that lightly ⛺️

Lightweight and compact, it provides instant shelter from wind, rain and cold, helping protect against exposure and hypothermia while you assess, treat, or wait for help. Used by mountain rescue teams worldwide, a bothy bag can turn a bad situation into a manageable one.

Small enough to carry. Important enough to save a life.

Not all CPD courses are created equal.
Some involve hotel conference rooms, stale coffee, and hours of PowerPoint slides…

This one’s a little different.

Welcome to Wilderness Rescue Medicine – Marine NZ with RescueMED and - an immersive training experience for medical professionals wanting hands-on skills in remote, wilderness and austere medicine.

Over 5 days, you’ll train in real-world environments, travel by helicopter into remote Tamatea/Dusky Sounds, live aboard an expedition vessel for the week, and learn medicine far beyond the hospital walls. But what makes this course unforgettable isn’t just the training. People come for the medicine… but leave with something much deeper.

Somewhere between the mountains, the ocean, the slower pace, and being disconnected from the constant noise of everyday life, and resuss bays something shifts. You reconnect - with yourself, your environment, and the people around you.

It becomes more than a course. It becomes a reset.

A chance to step away from the rush and return feeling refreshed, grounded, and ready to tackle your world again, but with new knowledge and skills in remote and wilderness medicine.

It’s hard to explain.
It’s something you have to experience.

Turns out “remote medicine training” is a lot less sitting in classrooms… and a lot more carrying stretchers, cold hands, physical scenarios and questionable weather choices 🌧️⛰️

Hard work? Absolutely.
Worth it? Every single time.
