Following last year, I learned so much again this year from Dr. Heeseok Jung () of Gwangju Sebo Oriental Medicine Clinic, who generously took time out of his precious schedule.

It was a incredibly helpful day as he selflessly taught and shared his knowledge on Tuina manual therapy, acupuncture, and herbal medicines.

Paying for just pork cutlet and udon felt like far too little for the value of the lesson.
On top of that, he even gave me a ride all the way to my house—which is 80 kilometers away!

Next year, I definitely need to buy him a much nicer dinner.

7 酒性雖熱, 體同於水. 今東垣乃謂飮者無形之氣, 此亦不能無疑也. 旣待發汗利小便以去之, 其可謂無形之氣乎. 《丹心》

술의 성질이 비록 열은 있으나 형(形)은 물과 같다. 동원이 마시는 것을 무형의 기라고 말한 것은 의심하지 않을 수 없다. 땀을 내거나 소변이 잘 나가게 하면 제거되는데 무형의 기라고 할 수 있겠는가? 《단심》
Although alcohol has heat in its qualities, its form is like water. Therefore, Dongyuan (東垣)'s considering its qi as formless can't be accepted without question. Can it be considered formless when it can be removed by inducing sweating or urination? 《丹心》

6 酒雖與水同體, 然傷於腸胃, 則升之不散, 降之不下, 鬱於氣分無形之位, 盖逐氣升降, 而半有消耗之矣. 今人飮醇酒則小便少, 此其可驗. 故治法, 宜汗宜利小便爲上策. 東垣以爲無形之物, 固不可, 後人以傷飮食同治, 亦不可. 《丹心》

술은 물과 같은 액체이지만 술로 장위(腸胃)를 상하면 올려도 흩어지지 않고 내려도 내려가지 않아 기분(氣分)의 형(形)이 없는 곳에 쌓인다. 기를 따라 오르내리면서 반은 소모되니 요즈음 사람들이 술을 마시면 소변이 적은 것이 그 증거이다. 그러므로 치료할 때는 땀을 내거나 소변을 잘 나가게 하는 것이 상책이다. 동원이 술을 무형의 물질로 여긴 것도 잘못된 것이지만, 후인들이 음식상과 같이 치료하는 것도 잘못된 것이다. 《단심》
Alcohol is liquid, like water, but when the intestines and stomach are damaged from it, the sickness does not go away even when qi is led upwards or downwards. It accumulates in the qi aspect of the body, where there is no form. It follows qi and consumes it; a little amount of urine is the proof. Therefore, treatment must induce sweating or urination. Dongyuan (東垣)'s idea of treating this as lacking a distinct form was wrong, and the people who later treated it the same as food damage were also wrong. 《丹心》

5 酒者, 大熱有毒, 氣味俱陽, 乃無形之物也. 若傷之, 止當發散, 汗出則愈矣. 其次莫如利小便, 使上下分消其濕可也. 葛花解酲湯主之. 《東垣》

술은 열이 많고 독이 있으며, 기미(氣味)가 모두 양(陽)인 무형의 물질이다. 술에 상하면 단지 발산시켜야 하니 땀이 나면 낫는다. 그 다음은 소변을 잘 나가게 하여 위아래로 습을 나누어 없애야 한다. 갈화해정탕으로 치료한다. 《동원》
Alcohol has a lot of heat and toxins. Qi and flavour are both yang, and it does not have a distinct form. When a person is damaged due to alcohol, the treatment must only be dispersion; when the person sweats, it is a sign of healing. The next treatment is inducing urination; the pathogenic dampness in the body must be removed upwards and downwards. A Puerariae Flos Powder Decoction to Alleviate Hangovers is mostly used. 《東垣》

4 酒者, 五穀之津液, 米麴之華英, 雖能益人, 亦能損人. 何者, 酒有大熱大毒. 大寒凝海, 惟酒不氷, 是其熱也. 飮之, 昏亂易人本性, 是其毒也. 若辟風寒, 宣血脉, 消邪氣, 引藥勢, 無過於酒也. 若醉飮過度, 盆傾斗量, 毒氣攻心, 穿腸腐脇, 神昏錯謬, 目不見物, 此則喪生之本也. 《類聚》

술은 오곡의 진액이고 쌀누룩의 정수이다. 사람을 이롭게도 하지만 상하게도 한다. 왜냐하면 술은 열이 많고 매우 독하기 때문이다. 몹시 추울 때 바닷물은 얼지만 술이 얼지 않는 것은 열이 있기 때문이다. 술이 사람의 본성을 변화하게 하여 어지럽히는 것은 독이 있기 때문이다. 풍한(風寒)을 쫓거나 혈맥을 잘 통하게 하거나, 사기(邪氣)를 없애거나 약의 기세를 이끄는 것은 술보다 나은 게 없다. 그러나 술을 취하도록 마셔 한 말이나 되는 술동이를 비우면 독기가 심장을 공격하고 장(腸)을 뚫어 옆구리가 썩으며, 정신이 혼미하고 착란되며, 눈이 보이지 않게 된다. 이는 생명의 근본을 잃은 것이다. 《유취》
Liquor is the fluid of the five grains and the essence of yeast. Although it might help people, it can also harm people since it has a lot of heat and is very toxic. The sea freezes in very cold weather, but alcohol never freezes, however cold it is due to the heat inside. There is nothing better than alcohol for removing wind-cold pathogenic qi, relieving blood vessels, removing pathogenic qi or directing the qi of medicine. But if one drinks alcohol too much and empties the whole barrel, the toxic qi of the alcohol attacks the heart, invades the bowels to cause pain in the sides of the body, makes the mental state become unstable, and makes the eyes go blind. These symptoms indicate the loss of the origin of life. 《類聚》

취하고 배불리 먹은 후에 성교하면 주기(酒氣)와 곡기(穀氣)가 비(脾)에 모여 흩어지지 않고 부딪쳐 속에서 열이 성해진다. 그래서 열이 몸에 두루 퍼져 속에 열이 나면서 소변이 벌겋게 되는 것이다. 《내경》
When a person has sexual in*******se while one is drunk or full, the qi of the alcohol or food gathers in the spleen and collides with one another without scattering. This causes too much heat in the body. Then heat spreads throughout the body, causes a fever from the inside, and causes the urine to become red. 《內經》

Damage Due to Alcohol

1 內經曰, 酒入於胃, 則絡脉滿而經脉虛. 脾主爲胃行其津液者也. 陰氣虛則陽氣入, 陽氣入則胃不和, 胃不和則精氣竭, 精氣竭則不營其四肢也.

《내경》에, “술이 위(胃)에 들어가면 낙맥이 가득 차고 경맥이 허해진다. 비(脾)는 주로 위(胃)를 위해 진액을 운행한다. 술로 음기가 허하면 양기가 들어가고, 양기가 들어가면 위기(胃氣)가 고르지 못하다. 위기(胃氣)가 고르지 못하면 정기(精氣)가 다하고, 정기가 다하면 사지에 영양을 공급하지 못한다"고 하였다.

It is said in the Inner Classic (內經), "When alcohol enters the stomach, the collaterals overflow and meridians become deficient. The spleen mostly carries fluid and humor for the stomach. When yin qi is deficient, yang qi goes inside; when yang qi goes inside, stomach qi becomes uneven. When stomach qi is uneven, essential qi becomes exhausted; when essential qi is exhausted, it becomes unable to nurture the four extremities.
