Tongue-tie is a condition in where the thin piece of skin under a baby’s tongue is abnormally short, leading to a restriction in movement of the tongue.
Signs of a significant tongue tie can include:
- Tongue cannot extend beyond the baby’s lips
- Tongue cannot move sideways
- Tongue tip may take on a notched or heart shaped appearance
- When the tongue is extended, the tongue tip may appear flat or square, rather than pointed
Tongue tie can affect the baby’s ability to breastfeed effectively, often causing:
- Ni**le pain and trauma
- Poor breast milk intake
- A decrease in milk supply over time
- The baby often loses suction on the breast while feeding due to the tongue tie interfering with the baby’s ability to latch and suckle at the breast
But what can chiropractic care do?
Dr Sally can provide an adjustment to help release tension in the neck, jaw and cranial bones, promoting better movement of the tongue and jaw.
Chiropractic care can be beneficial both before and after a tongue tie release procedure [NOT offered by a chiropractor- this is done by an experienced clinician- typically dental.)
Pre-release chiropractic care is often used to relieve the tension and improve overall function, while post-release chiropractic care aids in rehabilitating the head, spine, and tongue, correcting motor skill development of the tongue and spine, and support ideal wound healing.
Chiropractic care may even assist in making a tongue tie release more successful due to the reduced muscle tension and improvement of bodily function both before and after the procedure.
