This conversation resonated deeply with me
When I was training, I was the first trainee in my program to take maternity leave
What many people don’t know is that I hid my pregnancy until I was five months pregnant
Not because I wasn’t excited
Not because I was unsure about becoming a mother
Because I was scared
Scared that I would be seen differently
Scared that people would question my commitment to surgery
Scared that opportunities I had worked so hard for might disappear
Looking back now, it seems extraordinary that I felt that way
But at the time, there weren’t many examples ahead of me
No clear roadmap
No reassurance that everything would be okay
Today, things are changing
Slowly, but they are changing
I am grateful to the women who came before me and helped make that possible
Women who challenged assumptions, opened doors and showed that being a surgeon and being a mother are not mutually exclusive
Today I am a surgeon, a mother, a business owner, a teacher and a speaker
And I hope the women coming through behind us never feel they have to choose between those parts of themselves
To every woman who went first: thank you ❤️

The way we use ICL surgery has changed and the ICL Viva is a big part of why 👁️

It corrects vision from inside the eye without touching the cornea and without removing the natural lens. Newer designs like the ICL Viva have expanded how we think about presbyopia, supporting both distance and near vision while keeping the natural lens intact.

Because it’s reversible and the lens is preserved, there’s flexibility as your vision changes over time.

If you’re suddenly struggling to read menus or hold your phone further away, that’s not just ageing. Your natural lens is starting to stiffen. 👁️

Some people in their 40s still do brilliantly with laser. Others need a lens-based approach. Good refractive surgery adapts with your eye over time, not against it.

Finally giving this the wall space it deserves 🎓👁️

My FWCRS Fellowship from the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences. It’s been great to see more colleagues recognised recently, a reflection of the continued growth and innovation in refractive and cataract surgery.

Grateful to have been recognised early on and to be part of this community.

Presbyopia doesn’t automatically mean lens surgery and that’s where Presbyond comes in 👁️

It’s a laser approach that shapes the cornea to extend your range of focus, without touching the natural lens. For the right eyes at the right stage, it can support both distance and near vision without replacing anything.

It’s not right for everyone. But for suitable patients it’s a really valuable option.

POV: You’re an ophthalmologist

This is my normal. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Most people still think laser is the only alternative to glasses. It’s not.

An ICL (implantable contact lens) sits inside the eye behind the iris. You can’t see it or feel it. And for the right patient, it can actually give better quality vision than laser.
It’s not the backup option. For the right eye, it’s the best one.
