How to wake yourself up as a teen with ADHD, without your parents’ help, requires time-estimation skills, consistency, and repetition.

Anxiety can make a safe moment feel dangerous.

Your heart races. Your thoughts spiral. Every “what if?” feels urgent. And suddenly your brain is treating a feeling like proof.

But feelings are real—even when they are not facts.

“I don’t feel safe” can sometimes mean: “My nervous system is on high alert.” It does not always mean that danger is happening right now.

A gentle pause can help:
• What can I see and hear around me?
• Is there evidence of immediate danger?
• Am I reacting to this moment—or to fear, stress, or a past experience?
• What would I tell someone I love who felt this way?

You do not have to argue with your anxiety or shame yourself for feeling it. Try reminding yourself: “I may feel anxious, but I can check the facts. Right now, I may still be safe.”

And if there is a real risk or you are unsure, reach out to a trusted person for support.

A CHILD’S VOICE: I HAVE ADHD, I NEED YOU TO KNOW…

“Sometimes a child with ADHD is trying twice as hard just to get through an ordinary day. What looks like distraction, forgetfulness, or impulsivity is often a brain working differently, not a child choosing to be difficult.

This “voice of the child” visual is a gentle reminder of what many young people with combined-type ADHD wish adults understood. When we shift from blame to curiosity, children feel safer, more capable, and more motivated to try.”

Do any of these patterns resonate with you?

You are not alone if they do. Many people spend years carrying beliefs and behaviours that helped them survive difficult experiences, but no longer serve them.

Awareness is the first step towards change. When you recognise a pattern, you have the opportunity to understand it, challenge it, and begin creating healthier ways of thinking, feeling and responding.

If any of these resonated with you, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Your insight might also help someone else realise they are not alone.

Screens are a part of everyday life, and for many children they provide enjoyment, connection and learning. But sometimes they begin to meet emotional needs rather than simply providing entertainment.

Screen dependence is rarely about the screen itself. It can develop when children use devices to escape anxiety, overwhelm, boredom or difficult emotions. Understanding the reason behind the behaviour helps us respond in ways that support the child, rather than simply focusing on taking the device away.

Today’s visual looks at some of the common signs that screens may be becoming more than just a hobby.

The behaviour you punish today could be a child's survival response.

The child who lashes out may be in fight mode. The one who runs away may be in flight. The child who goes quiet and seems to switch off may be frozen. The one who constantly tries to keep everyone happy may be fawning.

These are not choices. They are automatic survival responses that happen when a child feels unsafe, overwhelmed or frightened. Looking beneath the behaviour can completely change how we respond.

When we replace judgement with curiosity, punishment with connection, and ask "What has happened to this child?" instead of "What is wrong with this child?", we give children a much better chance to heal.

Too many children are labelled as naughty, defiant, manipulative or attention-seeking when they are actually doing what their nervous system believes is necessary to survive.

ADHD paralysis and ADHD burnout can look similar, but they’re not the same.

🔸️One is feeling stuck despite wanting to move.

🔸️The other is what can happen after pushing yourself for too long.

⭕️Neither means you're lazy, broken, or not trying hard enough. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is recognize what your brain is asking for instead of fighting it. Give yourself the same compassion you'd give someone you love. 💛

Some children are punished for the very skills they have never been taught.

A child who screams, hits, refuses, hides, cries or shuts down is not always choosing to be difficult. They are often struggling with feelings that are simply too big for them to manage.

Emotional regulation is not something children are born with. It develops through safe, patient and supportive relationships.

Imagine if every adult understood this before reacting to a child's behaviour.

Less shame. Less punishment. More understanding. Better outcomes.
