👓 FUN FACT FRIDAY 👓
Optometry in Parkes
Part 7.
Another first! In 2019, Dr John became the first optometrist from Parkes to be appointed as a full faculty member and lecturer at the Department of Vision Science at the University of Canberra (UC). As the optometry course was only in its second, year, there were only 3 academic staff members, and that included Dr John! The course units had to be written by Dr John and his fellow staff members, so it was hectic to say the least. Dr John is still involved at UC on a less formal basis, now as a sessional academic, presenting lectures and tutorials as required as well as being involved in making up and marking exam questions for the final year students in their Objective Subjective Clinical Exams. In the tutorials and lectures for Integrated Eyecare and Ocular Therapeutics, he uses patient presentations which he has seen in his clinical practice to demonstrate to students how they should differentially diagnose ocular pathology and then determine the appropriate treatment. These real-life examples show the students how things happen in the real world, and that it may not be like it is in the textbooks! The UC teaching not only inspires him in his clinic in Parkes, it keeps him right up to date with the latest diagnostic and treatment protocols for a wide range of eye conditions. Which is fantastic news for his patients! (But only if you are one of them!)
