Kids have an incredible talent for keeping us on our toes.

One minute they're happily playing and the next they're standing on the kitchen bench, or attempting to be superman while standing on a wobbly bar stool.

As much as we'd love to keep them wrapped in bubble wrap, that's not really how childhood works.

Kids are meant to explore. To climb. To test their limits, which also means there'll be bumps, bruises and the occasional tumble along the way.

We can't stop every fall but we can make sure we're ready if something more serious happens.

The most dangerous words around water are often:
"I thought you were watching them."

It's a conversation that happens more often than people realise. Mum thought Dad was watching.
Dad thought Grandma was watching. Grandma thought the kids had gone inside. Meanwhile, nobody was actively supervising.

Whether it's a pool, the bath, the beach or even a backyard gathering, assumed supervision can be incredibly DANGEROUS.

One of the simplest safety habits a family can adopt is assigning a designated watcher.
Not everyone. One person.

When everyone is responsible, sometimes nobody is so always designate a supervisor.

Drowning doesn't look like drowning.
And that's what makes it so dangerous.

It’s World Drowning Prevention Day and we're sharing one of the most important water safety messages everyone should know.

Most people imagine drowning as splashing, waving and calling for help.
In reality, it's often silent.

A child struggling in the water may be unable to shout, wave or attract attention. They can slip beneath the surface in seconds.

That's why active supervision matters.
Not watching from inside.
Not while scrolling your phone.
Not assuming someone else is keeping an eye on them.
Just one responsible adult, actively watching.

Sadly, drowning continues to claim hundreds of lives in Australia every year and drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children.

Today is a reminder that drowning is often quick, silent and preventable.
💙 Learn CPR.
💙 Supervise children around water even in the bath.
💙 Check pool fences and gates.
💙 Never assume someone else is watching.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Professor Tony Walker ASM, the founder of Emergcare and one of Victoria's most respected leaders in emergency care and the paramedic profession.

Tony established Emergcare in the early 1990s with a simple but powerful belief: that every person should have access to the knowledge and confidence to help in an emergency. Driven by a genuine commitment to people and communities, he created an organisation dedicated to making first aid education practical, accessible and empowering for families across Victoria.

That same commitment shaped an extraordinary career in emergency services.

Today, we join the many honouring Tony's remarkable contributions to the paramedic profession and the Victorian community.

Throughout his career, including his leadership as CEO of Ambulance Victoria, he championed the advancement of the profession, supported those who served within it, and worked tirelessly to improve care for the communities they protected.

More than three decades after Emergcare was founded, we are incredibly proud to continue the mission Tony began. Every course we deliver and every person we empower with lifesaving skills is a reflection of the vision he set in motion all those years ago.

Tony's legacy extends far beyond the organisations he led. It lives on in the countless lives touched through education, compassion and his unwavering belief that knowledge has the power to save lives.

Thank you, Tony, for your vision, your leadership, and your lifelong dedication to helping others.

Grandparents are often some of the most trusted people in a child's life.

They're the babysitters, a part of the school pick-up tag team, the sleepover hosts and the extra set of hands every parent is grateful for.

First aid advice has evolved!

The CPR techniques taught 20 years ago aren't the same as those taught today. Neither is our understanding of choking, allergic reactions and when to seek urgent medical help.

Your child knows your iPhone password however; do they know what to do in an emergency?

This is one of the most important skills we can teach our kids and one of the easiest to overlook.

If something unexpected happened, would your child know:
📞 How to call 000?
👨‍👩‍👧 Their parents' full names?
📱 A parent's phone number?
🏠 How to tell someone where they are?
🙋 How to ask a trusted adult for help?

You don't need to wait until they're older.
Start small.
Practice calling for help.
Role-play different scenarios.
Turn it into a game in the car.

In an emergency situation children don't need to know everything. Just knowing a few key things can make a big difference.

Take a moment today and ask your child:
"If you needed help, what would you do?"

A first aid tip every parent should know: THE GLASS TEST

Your child develops a rash.
What now?
One simple thing you can do is the glass test.

Take a clear drinking glass and press it firmly against the rash.

👉 If the rash fades and turns pale under pressure, that's called a blanching rash.
👉 If the rash doesn't fade and remains visible, it's called a non-blanching rash.

Why does this matter?
A non-blanching rash can sometimes be associated with serious illnesses that require urgent medical assessment.

It's important to remember that the glass test doesn't diagnose anything however, it can provide useful information and help you decide whether further medical attention is needed.

🚨 If your child is also unwell, difficult to wake, struggling to breathe, or you're concerned for any reason, seek medical advice immediately.

Save this one. It's a simple check that every parent should know.
