🪟🧠 The concept of the Window of Tolerance, developed by Dr Dan Siegel, describes the range of emotional and physiological arousal in which we can function effectively, think clearly, and respond to life’s challenges in a balanced way.

Within this window, we are generally able to regulate our emotions, process information, and cope with stress.

When stress becomes overwhelming, we may move outside this optimal zone into hyperarousal (feeling anxious, overwhelmed, agitated, or on high alert) or hypoarousal (feeling numb, disconnected, shut down, or withdrawn).

Understanding the Window of Tolerance can help us recognise our own responses to stress and develop strategies to support regulation, resilience, and wellbeing.

Healing isn’t linear, and it doesn’t come with a deadline.

Many people find themselves thinking, “I should be over this by now” when difficult emotions resurface. But healing isn’t about how quickly you move on - it’s about giving yourself the space to process, grow, and respond to challenges with self-compassion.

Sometimes what feels like a setback is actually part of the journey.

If this resonates with you, consider the questions in this post and remember that progress can look different from day to day.

For support, contact the team at Western Sydney Clinical Psychology or call (02) 9090 4850. Their clinic provides psychological support for adults, children, adolescents and families in Parramatta and via telehealth.

ADHD can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming, especially when there are competing priorities, distractions, or too many things demanding your attention at once 🧠👩🏼‍⚕️

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, small strategies can make a meaningful difference. Breaking tasks into manageable steps, using reminders, scheduling regular breaks, and recognising progress along the way can help create structure and reduce the mental load.

Remember, productivity isn’t about doing more: it’s about finding systems that work for you.

If you’re navigating ADHD and finding it difficult to manage daily responsibilities, support is available. Working with a psychologist can help you better understand your strengths, develop practical strategies, and build confidence in managing challenges.

When emotions feel overwhelming, it can be difficult to think clearly or respond in ways that align with our values. That’s where the DBT skill TIPP can help.

What is DBT?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people develop practical skills for managing intense emotions, coping with distress, improving relationships, and staying present in the moment. TIPP is one of DBT’s distress tolerance skills, designed to help reduce emotional intensity quickly when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

TIPP stands for:

🧊 Temperature
Using cold water or an ice pack on your face can help activate the body’s calming response, slowing your heart rate and reducing emotional overwhelm.

🏃 Intense Exercise
Short bursts of physical activity can help release built-up stress, adrenaline, and tension, making strong emotions feel more manageable.

🌬️ Paced Breathing
Slowing your breathing and extending your exhale helps signal safety to the nervous system, promoting a sense of calm.

💪 Paired Muscle Relaxation
Tensing and releasing muscle groups helps reduce physical tension and encourages both the body and mind to relax.

TIPP won’t make a difficult situation disappear, but it can help bring your emotional intensity down so you can respond more effectively rather than react impulsively.

If you’re finding emotions difficult to manage or would like support building practical coping strategies, the team at Western Sydney Clinical Psychology is here to help.

Anxiety is a condition that affects how people feel & behave. People with anxiety may experience constant worry, have difficulty relaxing, & often feel tense or on edge. They may also avoid certain situations due to fear or unease.

Here we debunk anxiety and provide a more factual account.

To receive support for your anxiety, a mental health professional can provide you with assistance.
