Today, we recognise White Cane Safety Day as we celebrate the independence, confidence and mobility of people who are blind or have low vision.

The white cane is more than a mobility aid. It represents independence, accessibility and the right to move safely and confidently through our communities.

Together, we can help create communities that are safer, more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

🏥 HeadStart Program | Workplace Learning at Liverpool Hospital

Our Ability Advocates HeadStart Program participants from Miller Technology High School recently had the wonderful opportunity to visit Liverpool Hospital and take part in a personalised workplace tour of the Information Technology, Switchboard and Clinical Information departments.

The visit provided students with valuable insight into how different teams work together to support the day-to-day operations of a major healthcare organisation. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world workplace experiences and explore potential career pathways in business, information technology and healthcare.

Beyond career awareness, the experience also supported our students to build confidence, independence, communication skills and social connections in an inclusive workplace environment.

We sincerely thank the Liverpool Hospital team for their time, hospitality and willingness to share their knowledge and experience with our students. Your support helps create meaningful opportunities for young people to explore their potential and prepare for their future careers. 💙

💜 Beautiful Achievement 💜

Success isn’t always measured by jobs, certificates or qualifications.

Sometimes it’s organising your own travel.

Sometimes it’s communicating with friends independently.

Sometimes it’s building the confidence to participate in your community.

Recently, a parent shared this feedback after watching a group of young people supported by Ability Advocates independently coordinate their day, manage payments, communicate with one another and participate with confidence:

We don’t have an inclusion problem.

We have a systems problem.

Today at the Australian HR Summit 2026, our CEO Lorraine Salloum delivered a session at the International Convention Centre Sydney titled:

Lessons Learned in Inclusive Recruitment:
Moving Beyond Quotas to High‑Performance Cultures

What became clear in the room was this:

✅ Targets are being met
✅ Hiring is happening
❌ And organisations are still quietly absorbing risk through turnover, underperformance, burnout, and late escalation

Not because people with disabilities aren’t capable -
but because our systems were never designed to support difference without friction.

Inclusive recruitment isn’t about lowering standards.
It’s about finally being clear on:

what predicts success in roles
how managers are supported to lead difference
how psychological safety enables performance
and whether our organisations intervene early - not at crisis point
When inclusion is done well, performance improves for everyone.
When it isn’t, the costs simply show up elsewhere.

The real question for leaders isn’t “Do we care about inclusion?”
It’s “Are our systems capable of it?”

Ability Advocates joined the Western Sydney Vocational Support Network today, where CEO Lorraine Salloum spoke about the impact of advocacy in people’s lives.

She highlighted our work in NDIS access and Tribunal support, inclusive employment, CALD and high‑risk community outreach, and our NDIA‑funded VoiceAbility peer program.

Her message: Advocacy is human, relational and life-changing.

Grateful to WSVSN for their partnership in building a more inclusive Western Sydney.
