In May we had the pleasure of welcoming Associate Professor Jasneek Chawla, Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Specialist from Children's Health Queensland, along with Megan Angliss, Clinical Nurse. They presented to parents of 0-3 year olds on patterns of sleep breathing disorders in infancy and early childhood, covering all aspects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea including symptoms and how to manage it including the use of CPAP in young children.

Multicultural Disability Advocacy Australia Conference

Down Syndrome NSW was proud to attend the MDAA Education Conference in May, contributing to important conversations around inclusive and accessible education for all students and families.

Isabel Ramirez shared her personal experiences navigating the education system as someone from a CALD background, highlighting both the challenges families can face and the importance of connection, understanding and advocacy.

Alison Maunder spoke about the importance of genuine accessibility, culturally responsive collaboration, and ensuring families of children with disability from CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds feel informed, heard and supported throughout their educational journey.

Jill Hellemans also spoke about the value of multi-tiered approaches within education settings, and the importance of building inclusive systems that support diverse learners at every level.

Thank you to Disability Advocacy Australia for inviting DSNSW to be part of such an important event and for creating space for meaningful discussion, shared learning and collaboration.

Building Pathways to Meaningful Employment

Down Syndrome NSW is proud to be collaborating with the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) on an innovative pilot program exploring employment opportunities within government for people with an intellectual disability.

As part of this important work, Employment Ambassador Ellen Maher and Education and Employment Manager Alison Maunder were delighted to meet with the DCJ leadership and support team and deliver a workshop focused on supporting people with Down syndrome in the workplace. Together, we explored practical strategies for creating inclusive, welcoming, and successful employment experiences.

This pilot represents a significant investment in building more diverse and inclusive workplaces, and we are excited to be part of the journey.

A sincere thank you to Nina and the entire DCJ team for your leadership, innovation, and commitment to creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with intellectual disability. We look forward to continuing this important work together.

This opportunity has been facilitated through Down Syndrome NSW’s Employment Connections Program, delivered as part of Down Syndrome Australia’s ILC Employment Project.

The toddler years are some of the most important years in a child’s development 💙

For children with Down syndrome, early intervention can help build communication, confidence, learning, and independence during the years that matter most.

Your end-of-tax-time donation helps more families across NSW access advocacy, education, connection, and early-intervention support sooner.

$50 could help fund inclusive social and community programs that build confidence, friendships, and connection.

On Saturday, 30th May, we held our second New Babies Day for 2026 at Mounties Club at Mt Pritchard. The Board of Mounties very kindly donated a Club Grant to this event to cover all costs incurred. Parents and family learned some Key Word Sign Language from our sign language teacher/presenter, Lisa Dodd.

These events are a relaxing space for families to meet and learn something new from an expert about something relevant to Down syndrome and the age of their child.
And...there's always a bit of fun for the siblings as well!

Our next New Babies Day will be held on Saturday, 22nd August at Hornsby, so please save this date in your calendar if you have a baby/toddler aged 0-3 years.
