Recurring pain is one of the most common reasons people come to physio.

In many cases, symptoms settle — but the underlying strength, movement control, and tolerance haven’t fully returned.

That’s why flare-ups happen.

A structured rehab plan is often what breaks the cycle.

If you’ve been stuck in the flare-up cycle, we can help.

It's important to remember that movement is more than just moving around—it's also about feeling strong and empowered in your own body. Movement can help us cope with our disabilities by giving us something positive and productive to focus on in the midst of pain and discomfort, and it can help us feel better physically as well as mentally.

Movement is the key to coping with disability. The more you move, the better you'll feel, and the more you'll be able to do. You don't have to move every day—just as long as you're moving regularly on a daily basis.

Physical exercise is a great way to help get your body moving again. You can try walking or doing yoga at home, but if that's not your thing, there are tons of ways to get in shape without having to leave your house.

Getting your body moving again is something you can work into your routine, regardless of your goals or time constraints. You can try a new form of exercise now and then to keep things interesting, or stick with what you like most (so long as it's safe!).

Want to speed up your injury recovery? Here's a tip: heat and ice.

In physiotherapy, we use heat and ice to help with muscle pain, numbness, and swelling. But what are the best ways to use these therapies?

When it comes to heat, you can try using a hot shower or bath to relieve pain. If that doesn't work for you, try heating pads on your lower back or legs.

Heat is great for injuries that are painful, like a sprained knee or overworked muscles. Heat increases blood flow and helps with circulation, which means more oxygen going to your muscles and joints. If you're recovering from a torn ACL or an injury to your Achilles tendon, heat will help get them back to 100%.

Ice is also helpful for injuries that are painful, but it's better for muscle pain than for joint pain. Ice helps reduce inflammation by constricting blood vessels, which means less swelling in the affected area.

For ice therapy, try using an ice pack on your lower back or legs right after you're done exercising. You can also apply an ice pack directly on the area of concern.

Keep in mind that both of these therapies should be used only when they're needed—and if they don't provide any relief, you may need to make an appointment with your physician.

**Did You Know**

Benefits of using sports tape and Kinesio tape.

Sports tape is commonly used by sportspeople to provide additional support and protection while performing or participating in a sporting activity. The primary purpose of the tape is to provide additional support to muscles, joints, and ligaments by creating a restriction of movement. This can be felt by the rigidity of the tape. It is so popular among athletes because it protects the muscles by reducing the amount of impact athletes and sportsmen must endure while playing.
Kinesiology taping, on the other hand, aims to improve circulation, support muscles, promote healing, and aid in the prevention of injury. This effect is produced as a result of its elastic properties therefore creating recoil, lifting the skin and unloading tissues.

Suffering from neck pain?

One of the ways soreness of the neck may be triggered is by overstraining the neck muscles, For example, you may be hunched for too many hours in the same exact position while working in front of a computer monitor, or watching too much TV. Sound familiar?
Here are a few ways to quickly manage a muscle strain in the neck.
1. Regularly and gently stretch the neck muscles. One way you can do this is to tip your head to one side and use the arm on the same side you are tipping it to, in order to pull your head down to the side and increase the stretch.
2. Use a combination of ice and hot compress alternately to the affected area.
3. Keep checking your posture. Optimising your position will minimise the load and strain placed on the injured tissues and allow it to settle down quicker.
If you have difficulty managing your sore neck or are looking to accelerate your recovery then seek advice from your local Physiotherapist who will be able to further diagnose and treat your injury.

What to do when you have a knee injury?

A little bump here, and a little knee injury there, you just can't help it sometimes when you need to be active and there's a lot of chores or errand to do. Here are simple steps you can do to remedy simple knee injuries.

Ice can lower swelling and irritation and help stop bleeding for minor injuries. The cold restricts blood circulation, which can numb the pain. It also can help reduce any bruising.

On the other hand, a warm compress is an easy way to increase blood inflow to sore areas of your body. This helps reduce pain and speed up the recovery process. You can use a warm compress for a range of conditions, including sore muscles.

Rest yourself on a sofa or a comfortable surface and apply compression, or wrap the injured or sore knee with an elastic bandage to help decrease the swelling, as well as applying ice or cold compress will lessen both the ache and swelling. Remember to place a towel over the ice pack or hot compress bag to avoid direct contact with the skin over the affected area.

Having your joints and muscles in one spot for prolonged periods at a time can contribute to the feeling of tightening of the muscles. This can be due to the lack of adequate blood flow that causes tension and the feeling of tightness. Other contributors can be due to general health issues, inadequate sleep or sleeping habits, your diet, or lack thereof.

What can we do about it?
✅ Be mindful to change your posture every 30 or 60 minutes.
✅ Add simple stretches when changing posture.
✅ Regular, simple exercises that don't need to be too demanding for your muscles.

☝️ Always remember movement is the key. Movement is medicine.

Skinny jeans may be a versatile item in your wardrobe but if you're already experiencing some front knee pain, it can provide unnecessary compression. The affected structures in your knee would be irritated even further!

If you feel that this situation may be applicable to you, try to wear loose-fitting pants.
