Want to speed up your injury recovery? Here's a tip: heat and ice.
In physiotherapy, we use heat and ice to help with muscle pain, numbness, and swelling. But what are the best ways to use these therapies?
When it comes to heat, you can try using a hot shower or bath to relieve pain. If that doesn't work for you, try heating pads on your lower back or legs.
Heat is great for injuries that are painful, like a sprained knee or overworked muscles. Heat increases blood flow and helps with circulation, which means more oxygen going to your muscles and joints. If you're recovering from a torn ACL or an injury to your Achilles tendon, heat will help get them back to 100%.
Ice is also helpful for injuries that are painful, but it's better for muscle pain than for joint pain. Ice helps reduce inflammation by constricting blood vessels, which means less swelling in the affected area.
For ice therapy, try using an ice pack on your lower back or legs right after you're done exercising. You can also apply an ice pack directly on the area of concern.
Keep in mind that both of these therapies should be used only when they're needed—and if they don't provide any relief, you may need to make an appointment with your physician.
We'd love to hear from you!
