It’s International Week of Deaf People 👂

Following closely to World Sign Language Day, is the Week of the Deaf. Founded in 1958 as a special event to support the rights of deaf people. They wanted people to understand that deaf people have their own cultures, languages and ways of connecting. 🫂

About 70 million people worldwide are deaf. They face barriers to inclusion that many others do not, but communication tools like sign language can greatly improve their outcomes and reduce isolation. 🫶

Deaf people bring so much to society, and this week we pause to recognise and celebrate all they achieve. Famous examples are music composer Beethoven who wrote multiple musical masterpieces after losing his hearing at age 40, or hard of hearing engineer Thomas Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb, who thought of his disability not as a handicap but as a help so he didn’t have to participate in small talk and could concentrate on his work instead! 🎶💡

It’s international Day of Sign Languages 🫶

Worldwide there are more than 300 different sign languages. Sign languages are fully fledged languages, just like spoken languages, and they’re deeply connected to culture, which is part of why so many sign languages exist. Just as English is used as an international language, sign also has an international version too, often used when travelling or for international meetings. 👋

The Australian sign language is called Auslan and is used in the home by at least 16.000 Australians. Sign language is fundamental to the deaf community for expression of their culture, identity and connection. 💛

So today we raise awareness (and maybe even take a few moments to learn a few new words in a new language!)

Recently WA Southwest Coastal Coach Gemma organised for team Busselton to engage in a morning of celebration and acknowledgement around the pivotal role in which our support workers undertake. 💪

Gemma said: "I feel that it is impossible to overstate the impact that our support workers make within our community and within client’s journeys. My Supports continues to acknowledge the importance of getting together, away from our work routine and connect more socially. This is how we become stronger as a team." 🤝

As a result, we organised for an early morning walk and talk down the iconic Busselton Jetty and then finished with chat and morning tea overlooking the pristine coastline. 🌊

Local support workers spoke candidly about how important it is to them to remain connected with Team Leaders but also each other. 🫶

It is R U OK day! 💛

R U OK is an Australia-wide initiative that was initiated by Gavin Larkin who lost his dad to su***de. To try and protect other families from the pain he endured, he started his campaign with one question: “Are you OK”. 💬

People go through life’s ups and downs every day. However, a third of people don’t realise they can make by checking in with someone they care about even though 9 in 10 of those who were asked “are you OK?” report feeling grateful, cared about, and supported. 🫶

We also know 1 in 4 people hesitate to ask even when they know someone is struggling. So how do you ask? Start the conversation by commenting on changes you’ve noticed. They might have been more withdrawn, agitated or just not themselves. Listen without judgment or jumping in, encourage action by asking questions and check in later how they are going. 📞

Trust your instinct and start a conversation, because a conversation could change a life. 💪

It's World Duchenne Awareness Day 💪

Duchenne is the biggest genetic killer of boys and you have probably never heard of it. 1 out of 3500 boys, and very rare girls, are born with Duchenne. As it’s caused by a fault on the dystrophin gene on the X chromosome, it mostly affects boys. 🧬

Dystrophin is a protein found in all muscles and is needed to repair muscle so people with Duchenne’s will experience progressive muscle damage and loss of muscle. It’s a progressive disease and the life expectancy is their mid 20s. About 1500 people in Australia currently live with Duchenne’s right now. 🧑‍🦽‍➡️

There is currently no cure so more research is needed to improve the lives of people with Duchenne’s so let’s raise awareness! 📣

Our client Nathan plays for the Swan all abilities team and has recently played his 50th game! He’s been with the team for 3 years now but has been playing footy since 2013. 🏉

He started playing for fun of it, but nowadays he takes a lot of joy helping everyone in his team shine! The team exists of people with varying disabilities, each with their own strengths, challenges and goals. Whether it’s achieving making two goals, or just kicking the ball, he likes to help his teammates achieve them. He loves to see the smiles on their faces when they do something that is challenging for them. That makes him go back every time. 🤩

Although some players play in their set position, Nathan plays wherever he is needed, whether that is midfield or backliner. He’s happy to play any position as long as it helps the team! They train twice a week and on Thursdays enjoy a meal together afterwards which gives the opportunity to meet other people in the club. 🍝

He’s most proud of when he started playing with the Swan districts for the first time, it was a challenge for him to get into the team and he had to overcome a roadblock and grow to become a better person. 💪

Nathan’s team finished the minor premiers for the year, and they are now preparing for their first finals! Teams from suburbs all around Perth will be participating. Nathan is particularly proud as last year their team were on the bottom but they have moved to a new division and are now one of the top teams! He’s hoping that as a team they can go and win their first flag! 🏆

He encourages everyone to give all abilities footy a go! “If they want to have a game and a run, join up and look up an all abilities team that suits you! Have a go! You’ll be sure to make new friends!“ 🌟
