"Use your voice"...we say it to kids all the time. But there's more to it than we often realise.
When we vocalise, whether that's singing, humming, chanting, or even just speaking up, we activate the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in calming the nervous system. It's not just emotional. It's physiological.
For school-aged children (and honestly, for all of us), having a safe space to use your voice, to be heard without judgement, can be genuinely transformative.
At Glissando, helping children find and use their voice is at the heart of what we do.

Not every child is ready to talk. And that's completely okay.
Music therapy doesn't ask children to perform or explain themselves. It meets them where they are, whether that's loud and expressive, or quiet and withdrawn. Both are welcome.
If you've been waiting until your child is "ready" for therapy, this might be the sign that they already are.

Got any questions? My DM's are always open and I'm more than happy to chat about how music therapy might benefit your child

If your child has ADHD and can't sit still...put them behind a drum kit 🥁
Drumming isn't just a release (though it is that too). Rhythm engages both sides of the brain simultaneously, provides deep sensory input, and creates the kind of predictable, repetitive pattern that helps a dysregulated nervous system settle.

For ADHD brains specifically, drumming can:
✅Improve focus through structured movement
✅ Support dopamine regulation naturally
✅ Build a sense of timing and body awareness
✅ Give big energy somewhere purposeful to go

It's loud. It's physical. It's a great instrument to try for big energy ADHD kids. Follow Glissando to learn more about how rhythm-based music therapy supports neurodivergent kids.

If transitions are a daily battleground in your house, you are not alone, and your child is not giving you a hard time on purpose.
Transitions are genuinely difficult for a lot of school-aged kids, particularly those with anxiety, ADHD, or sensory sensitivities. Music therapy works with the nervous system to make those shifts feel safer and more manageable.
Pretty amazing, right? Are transitions something you or your child struggle with? Let's talk about it in the comments below

You don’t need a music therapy session to start using music intentionally at home, but it helps to know why it works.

Rhythm and familiar music create neurological predictability. For kids who struggle with transitions, that predictability is genuinely regulating, not just soothing in the moment, but building capacity over time 💪🏼

Think about it this way...your child’s nervous system is constantly scanning for cues about what’s coming next. When the environment feels unpredictable or abrupt, that system goes on alert. But a familiar song? It’s a cue the brain already knows. It signals safety. It signals sequence. It says this is what happens now, and I know what comes after.

That’s why a consistent song at school drop-off can become a genuine goodbye ritual rather than a battleground. It’s why a wind-down playlist can do more for bedtime than any amount of reasoning or negotiating.

The music isn’t a trick or a distraction, it’s giving the nervous system the information it needs to feel okay about what’s changing 🎶

Still think music therapy is just for kids who play piano or can sing? Let's clear that up.
Music therapy is an evidence-based profession where music is used as a tool, not a performance. We can work with you and your child on a wide range of everyday goals like communication, emotional regulation, managing big transitions, and finding ways to express what words sometimes can't reach.
No experience is needed (not for you or your child, promise!). No pressure to perform. Just music, meeting your child where they are.

Music therapy supports a lot more than you might think, and it looks different for every child.
These are five of the most common goals we work towards at Glissando with school-aged kids. No musical experience needed. No pressure. Just a space where your child gets to show up exactly as they are.

Save this post if it's helpful, and comment GLISSANDO if you'd like to know more about our Foundation package.

Music is such a powerful way to stay focused on your goals. Sometimes I turn my goals into songs… so I can come back to them again and again.
These lyrics aren’t just about money…they’re little reminders to stay grounded, keep going, and trust the process in my own way.
Music has a way of making things stick. It keeps me connected to why I started, especially on the days where motivation feels a bit further away. Do you ever use music to keep yourself on track? 👇🏼
