So they sold you a defib, took your money and left you to figure out what it means when it flashes 3x instead of once every 5 seconds.

When you called for a warranty issue there were a whole host of reasons that warranty was voided… none of which you even knew were an issue - because nobody ever took the time to explain it at the point of sale.

It’s not enough to simply buy a defib. They have a shelf-life and maintenance needs, recalls and notices that you have to keep on top of.

Your defibrillator is rated 0–50°C. That’s not the number that matters.

It’s the operating range — the temperature the unit can be used at. Buried further in the same manual is a second figure: the long-term storage range. It’s the one that applies to a device sitting in a cabinet for eight years.

LIFEPAK CR2 → 15–25°C
ZOLL AED Plus pads → 0–35°C
Philips HeartStart HS1 → 10–43°C standby
Powerheart G5 → 20–30°C
Mindray BeneHeart → 15–35°C

A north-facing lockbox in Perth sits outside most of those for a good part of the year.

And the unit will still show green. A self-test checks its own electronics — not whether the gel in the pads has been slowly drying out.

Years as a paramedic taught me one thing: a defibrillator only saves a life if it actually works.

Australian WHS requirements are tightening. SA has already mandated AED’s in public workspaces such as aged care and retirement settings, pilates studios, pools and public spaces.

How long before the other states adopt these laws too?
