Finding balance with The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. I’m sure you’ve probably heard of them… but what are they?
The Yoga Sūtras are one of the foundational texts of yoga, written somewhere around 1,800–2,200 years ago. Well in the shortest way I can the are incredible teachings on the mind, suffering, practice, meditation and how we find greater clarity and freedom in our lives.
Have you ever been in a yoga class and thought, how does this teacher know exactly what I’m going through? Are they talking directly to me?
There’s a few reasons for that.
So much of yoga as we know it today draws from these teachings, and when it comes to being human, we’re actually pretty predictable! As far as I’ve found, nearly every Sūtra I learn somehow fits into some part of my life at any given time, however, sometimes one will shine through more than others.
This week I was feeling particularly unbalanced, and I really noticed it in my physical practice too. Balance poses that normally felt steady suddenly didn’t. Our emotions, frustrations and everything going on underneath can absolutely show up on the mat.
It made me look a little deeper at what was going on, and I spoke with my own teacher about it in depth. She pulled Yoga Sūtra 1.33 out of the bag. Pretty well the one I’d been thinking of — except of course she could say it in perfect Sanskrit and knew exactly where it fitted into the situation!
And slowly, I’m finding my balance again.
This is why I love the Sūtras. I don’t just want to study them — I want to use them in my life and I want to share them with you all too! When I’m not sure of the way forward, they give me something firm to come back to.
I can’t wait to see you on the mat this weekend at Yoga Maya, where I’d love to bring some of the Sūtras into our practice and explore maitrī — loving kindness, towards ourselves and each other.
