I’m excited to share something that Flourish has been quietly developing over the past year.

As psychologists, assessing for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) requires far more than administering tests and checking criteria. It involves understanding developmental history, interpreting patterns across academic skills, considering instructional history, and translating findings into meaningful recommendations for families and schools.

To support this process, I’ve developed the SLD Assessment Resource Kit for Psychologists.

The kit brings together a range of tools designed to support each stage of the assessment process, including:
• A comprehensive guide to understanding SLDs and DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria (including a quick start guide for those Psychologists just needing a quick visual guide to the assessment process)
• A structured diagnostic decision tree and guide
• Assessment planning and observation tools including a tick and flick observation sheet and interpretative table (answering the "what does this mean" question)
• Case examples illustrating clinical reasoning in practice
• A recommendations bank to support targeted interventions and accommodations
• Parent information sheets to help families understand assessment outcomes and next steps

The aim is to help psychologists approach SLD assessments with greater clarity, consistency, and confidence, while still allowing space for clinical judgement.

Perth-Based Assessments

We’re pleased to share that Flourish Assessment & Consultancy is now offering assessment appointments in Perth throughout the year. Where appropriate, some assessments can be completed in your child's school or via telehealth if you are an adult.

Alongside our regional outreach clinics, this provides families and individuals with more flexibility in how and when they access support.

Our assessments focus on understanding each person’s unique profile across areas such as learning, attention, development, and social communication—helping guide meaningful next steps.

Are you a parent of a Year 11 or 12 student who will be applying for special examination arrangements – SCSA diagnostic review assessments are now booking.

If your child:
• Already has a diagnosis
• Has existing exam adjustments
• Needs updated academic testing
• Is preparing for Year 11 or 12

Now is the time to organise review assessments.

SCSA applications for special examination arrangements require current evidence of functional impairment and applications for 2026 are due at the end of term 1 (for current year 12 students).
