Women receive pregnancy and delivery care from their chosen specialist and meet all the specialists on the after hours on call roster. Did you know: caesarean births are becoming more common in Australia. 🤰

New data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that the rate of births by caesarean section has increased steadily over the past two decades.

📈 In 2004, caesareans accounted for 29% of births.
📈 By 2023, this had risen to 41%.

At the same time, the proportion of non-instrumental vaginal births fell from 56% in 2010 to 48% in 2023.

Where are Australia’s mothers born? 🌏 Australia’s mothers come from diverse backgrounds, but the proportion born in Australia has been falling.

In 2012, 69% of mothers were Australian-born, and by 2023, that had fallen to 65%.

That means around 1 in 3 mothers in 2023 were born overseas!

Over the past few decades, the age at which Australians become parents has increased.

Between 1975 and 2024, the median age of:

👩 Mothers increased from 25.8 to 32.1 years
👨 Fathers increased from 28.6 to 33.9 years

But age is only part of the story.

Demographers also look at completed cohort fertility (essentially, the average number of children women have over their lifetime) to understand how childbearing patterns are changing from one generation to the next.

Social, economic and cultural factors can all influence when people have children and how many they have.

So, are Australians simply having children later - or are they also having fewer children overall? 📊

Where are Australian babies being born? 🏥 In 2023, 97% of births took place in hospitals, with 3 in 4 hospital births occurring in public hospitals.

Outside hospitals:

🏩 1.5% in birth centres
🏠 0.7% at home
📍 0.7% in other settings

Home births have also increased slightly, from 0.3% in 2019 to 0.7% in 2023.
