As promised, I said I’d share my top tips from our 30 days of no spending
Honestly, the first few days were hard, but once we got into a groove it became so much easier and now it’s something we really want to continue.
Tip 1: Be organised
For me, this meant making sure we always had food in the house so we weren’t ducking out for takeaway or random snacks. I started doing two Woolies orders a week instead of browsing the shops, which helped cut out so many unnecessary purchases.
We tried to stick to a $500 weekly grocery budget for our family of four and that included everything: milk, bread, meat, fruit, lunches, dinners… the works. I’ve also been making homemade treats for the kids’ lunchboxes and keeping plenty of fresh fruit in the house.
On weekends we’ve been making our own “fakeaway” meals instead of ordering out, and honestly? They taste so much better and save us so much money too.
Tip 2: Cut back on the extras
We stopped buying coffees and alcohol for the month, and that alone saved us over $800 😳
We also stopped buying bottled water while we were out and made sure we always had water bottles from home with us.
Tip 3: Go through your bills
This one shocked me the most. I went through all our monthly bills and subscriptions and ended up saving over $2,000 for the year just by calling insurance companies, Foxtel, and cancelling or adjusting subscriptions we barely used.
It’s crazy how much money we spend without even realising it.
And lastly something I still need to do is go through the house and sell unwanted items on local buy, swap and sell pages. There’s definitely money sitting around in things we no longer use.
Have you got any saving tips?
