Balance is a brain skill as much as a physical skill.

Good balance relies on the vestibular system (inner ear), vision and body awareness working together. Practicing balance is an excellent input for the nervous system, important for movement, coordination, confidence and learning.

Try:
1. Single leg balance
2. Tightrope walking
3. Foam pad or pillow balance

Start with 30–60 seconds each and build from there.

Make it playful and consistent! Make this a part of your daily routine.

Kids fall over, a lot!

Every bump, knock and fall is something the nervous system has to process and adapt to. The accumulation of those little and bigger knocks can be a stress on the nervous system.

Imagine at birth you had a backpack. All of those little knocks, medium ones and the “oooph that was a bad one!” Or maybe even some significant head injuries add load to the nervous system and the easeful connection between brain and body through the spine. We need a clear connection to regulate every single function the body has optimally.

A strategy to clearing nervous system stress and misalignments as they arise is to be checked and adjusted by a chiropractor. This means the body is less likely to have the compounding effects of stress that you may notice as behavioural or mood changes, coordination difficulties and even… more falls!

Correcting these interferences to brain- body connection goes a long way to improving resilience and adaptability.

W-Sitting

W-sitting can be natural and nothing to worry about if it is used sometimes. When it is the dominant sitting pattern it can be a clue that there are underlying challenges going on.

W-sitting can represent a body that is seeking stability, because the core and muscles of the spine are not doing their job effectively to stabilise, a compensation is made.

If there are other challenges such as:
-Delayed walking
- Unusual crawling pattern or delay
- Difficulties with strength and coordination in activities and sports
- Poor posture, slumping, leaning on things
- ‘Floppy’ muscle tone

It is worthwhile understanding what may be causing these issues, starting with nervous system function.

Regulation walk🌳

A beautiful way to come back to body and breath is with the 4-7-8 breath work technique.

Inhale for the count of 4, count with your steps.

Hold for the count of 7.

Exhale (through pursed lips) for the count of 8.

Your jaw will soften and melt after about 3 breaths.

Then take the time to notice your surroundings you pass- the things you can see, feel, smell. Tell your body is safe to be here now 🥰

Stress, a word we hear a lot about these days!

But what does it actually mean?

Chiropractic often uses this framework to understand where our nervous system stress and dysregulation may have come from so we can take steps to lead the healthiest life available to us.

The 3 main types of stressors are:

Physical- the birth process, knocks, bumps, falls, accidents, injuries, our posture, how we sit, sleep and stand.

Chemical- chemical substances in our food, water, air, in our home and beauty products, medications and also the internal chemistry of stress or imbalance in our bodies.

Emotional and mental- thoughts, emotions and experiences that were dysregulating to us that we were not able to let go of in the moment.

These stressors have a cumulative effect on our bodies and little things do add up over time. This is why you may notice a sudden drop in health externally, but it is likely that the small and big things were adding up as a heavy load in our back pack over time.

Life isn’t perfect, we all know! We do our best to reduce those stressors, and chiropractic is there for us to help with our resilience, adaptation and healing as we navigate life ❤️✨

Lets talk sunlight!

Sunlight is so important to the circadian rhythm, that is your body’s inner clock which helps to determine:
- Sleep/wake timing
- Melatonin release
- Mood
- Energy
- Alertness
- Digestion, metabolism and hormone timing

Inadequate daytime light exposure and excessive evening artificial light can disrupt circadian rhythms and sleep quality.

Morning sunlight is particularly important. Try to watch the sunrise as often as you can and enjoy those little pockets of light on your skin even as we approach the colder months!

Sometimes it’s the unknown that serves as the barrier to ‘doing the thing’.

Will my child ‘behave well’ in the appointment? Will it be very clinical? Will it feel like yet another thing in our schedule that we need to do? Will it hurt or be uncomfortable?

In my experience, working with families can be so joyful. And those small misalignments and nervous system disconnections have a big effect on their day to day lives. Gentle nervous system based chiropractic care can help.

Curious? Please reach out with questions about what your family’s nerves system care could look like ❤️

Bee Breathing

Let’s activate the Vagus Nerve with some breathwork and vibration.

3. Breathe in, on the exhale hum as loud as you can!
4. Repeat with 5-10 breaths

Let’s talk Green Zone – Red Zone!

The Green Zone is our most regulated state, here we can have more access to calm, we want to connect and be around people, we are more curious, open and have the capacity for learning and better decision making.

The Red Zone is a different story, still so essential to our body’s functioning, but will look more like a short fuse, potentially more emotional, angry or frustrated. The priority here is safety. Connection and learning simply aren’t on the to do list. Lots of time spent in this state will often result in gut and immune issues, body tension and poor sleep.

Green and red zone states should wax and wane over the day, but if your child (or you!) feel like you’re stuck or are spending more time in the Red Zone, it would be worthwhile checking to see if your nervous system is asking for some more support.

Chiropractors are trained to assess for nervous system stress and help you find the ‘why’, correcting the cause of nervous system dysregulation. Questions? Send me a message, I’d love to chat with you.
