I'm missing my Dad. He was a passionate human rights advocate. He was a defence lawyer work pro bono on many human rights cases in Canada. So many people have come to me over the years and told me stories of how he helped them change their lives by some act of advocacy or kindness. I wish he was here now so we could get loud and passionate about the rapidly moving and blatant revocation of our rights and freedoms. I wish I knew what he knows about law, so we could combine it with my knowledge and we could start a metaphoric fire that would wake people out of their complacent slumber. A massive shout out to Orana Cinemas Geraldton for hosting this amazing film.
Only 40 people came to the cinema tonight to hear the story and support Julian Assange. The media has had us believe he is a criminal for 14 years. And for 14 years he has been languishing in confinement- much of it solitary. He told te truth about war crimes so they wouldn't be repeated. He is an Australian citizen who committed no crime, held in prison atm in Britain and the Americans want him extradited so they can put him in jail for 175 years for doing his job as a real, old fashioned journalist. So how does that work? Even if there was a crime, it didn't take place on American soil. What government would allow a citizen to be sent to some other country to face a crime that wasn't committed in that country? Never mind when there wasn't even a crime??? America is pi**ed that he released the truth in files and videos. Finding truth and shining light on it in hopes for a kinder future, that's his crime. He knew they'd come after him, but he was willing to sacrifice his life for our right to freedom of speech and human rights. Only 40 people showed up to find out more or support him.
Our Australian Prime Ministers, Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott, Malcolm Rudd, Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese have been completely silent on this topic until February of this year. Albanese reckons something needs to be done about it, and he'svoted in favour of Julian being sent back to Australia. Took 14 years for that vote to even be on the table. So now what? Everyone jumped on board when Corby was in Balanese prison for getting to the logical conclusion of a life involved with drugs. We got her back. Australian government where are you?? Man up!!
