One of the perks of being an independent optometrist is getting to pick out the toys... ahem, equipment we get to use in our clinic.

Knowing how important peripheral vision is, especially for those working in the mining and resources industry, we decided to invest in the industry gold-standard equipment for visual field testing.

Why didn't we settle for something less?

Peripheral vision plays a key role in our daily life, from driving, walking, observing hazards and keeping our bodies upright so we wanted to make sure that we had the technology to accurately identify and manage peripheral vision loss, leaving nothing to chance.

Our visual field analyser does more than just detect peripheral vision loss; it allows us to continually monitor and track changes with in-depth precision, so we can provide the correct treatment and support for your eyes over time.

We didn't decide to invest in leading edge technology because we wanted to be a fancy-shmants optometrist.

We did it because we believe in giving everyone fair access to the best level of service available to them.

We don't make you pay extra for in-depth eye testing, nor do we make the decision to withhold it just because we think you don't need it.

Every one who books with us gets the same level of care and access to our tech. Everyone gets an OCT, retinal and peripheral vision test. Everyone gets extensive ocular imaging. Everyone gets their results explained to them in plain English so you walk out the door knowing more about your eyes than when you came in.

And if we do find something? We've got the tools and expertise to work with your specialist to manage your treatment locally, not in Perth.

We often associate sight with central vision (the things we see straight ahead of us) which is important for things like reading, driving and recognising faces.

However, testing for peripheral vision is just as important - that's the vision that's outside of your central vision.

Peripheral vision is used for things like:
→ walking, as it aids with avoiding bumping into things, tripping and miscounting steps
→ balance, working with your inner ear and body sense to keep you upright and straight
→ driving, allowing you to notice things to the side of you like pedestrians, cyclists or other hazards without needing to turn your head

Another reason we test for peripheral vision is gradual loss of it could be an indicator of:
→ glaucoma, with peripheral vision being the first thing you lose
→ neurological conditions as it could reveal hidden damage or pressure to the brain
→ medication side effects which is why it's important for us to gather your WHOLE medical history, not just about your ocular history

When we opened up our clinic there was one thing we wanted to avoid.

There's nothing that gives us the ick than unnecessary upselling - you know what we mean, when you go to buy a new pair of frames and/or lenses, and the sales consultant pushes you to add on 3 types of coating and filters that you don't really need.

We believe in honesty and transparency at Hedland Eyecare, and that extends to your lens and frame selection. We'll take the time to learn about your lifestyle, whether you're an outdoors worker, office worker or stay-at-home parent, we'll recommend a pair that's acutally suitable for your day-to-day - not for our bottom line.

The decision to become an independent optometrist wasn't an easy one.

It was the right one.

It gives us more freedom - to take longer appointments, to build meaningful relationships, contribute to the community and most importantly, to give our patients the treatment they actually need (not what's driven by the bottom line).

If your vision is blurry and distorted no matter how many times your glasses get changed, there may be a reason the glasses aren't fixing it.

One possibility is keratoconus, a condition where the cornea gradually changes shape, bulging into a cone.

Ordinary glasses can only do so much for it, which is why it so often goes under-recognised. What actually helps is mapping the cornea's shape precisely with corneal topography, then fitting specialty or scleral contact lenses that restore clear, comfortable vision.

Industry best practice points to exactly this kind of specialist fitting and it's something we do right here, rather than sending you to the city for it.

The most valuable thing your optometrist has isn't a machine. It's your history.

A single snapshot of your eyes tells us how they look today. But the real power is in comparison - this year against last, and the year before that. A subtle change that means nothing on its own can mean everything when we can see it developing over time.

That only works if the same practice is holding your records year after year. It's the quiet advantage of a permanent, local practice over a service that comes and goes: we don't just see your eyes, we know their story.
