Supporting older people to stay independent, connected and confident in their everyday lives is one of the most rewarding parts of our work.

A mobility scooter isn’t just a piece of equipment, it can mean freedom, community access, routine and quality of life.

We feel so lucky to do this work every day.

INCLUDE THEM 💫

Let’s get them involved in the day to day activities we often start to do “for” them as their dementia progresses.

The familiar activities like watering the garden, folding the washing, cutting up vegetables, setting the table, dusting… these are often activities that involve skills that the person retains well into the disease.

How well they do the activity is NOT important anymore. It’s about getting them involved and not getting caught up about if they are doing it “right” or not. It doesn’t matter - as long as they are safe and engaged. This mindset can be hard to come to in the beginning, especially as we all have our own “rules and standards” about how things should be done.

It’s about engagement not perfection!

It’s about experiencing joy not completing the task perfectly.

It’s about feeling needed and useful.

It’s about being treated as though they still have skills and abilities, and can contribute.

Depending on the stage of dementia will depend on how much carer involvement is required to set up, prompt and monitor the activity, the difficulty of the task as well as how long they can concentrate for.

Our role as OTs is to help brainstorm with families and carers suitable activities that can help people living with dementia to still engage despite changing abilities 💫💫

6 years?! 🤯 🤍

Jess just hit her 6-year anniversary with Holistic OT today! She’s been here since the beginning and was my very first employee.

I think it is safe to say that the business wouldn’t be where it is today without Jess. From day one, she has been the most loyal and reliable person to have on our team. She has stuck by me and the business during its growth period and also during times of change and uncertainty and for that I will be forever grateful.

Jess - I am so lucky to have you. Thanks for everything you do and for being such a huge part of the Holistic OT journey 💫

Keeping our clients values, skills and potential at the forefront of our minds is something I really love about our profession.

Yes, we are always mindful of our clients diagnosis, prognosis and challenges, but we don’t let that define them or our approach to supporting them 💫

I remember seeing him sit in his recliner chair in the corner of the aged care facility. He was labelled “difficult.” Like so many of them are.

What if only we took more notice? Maybe we would see they are longing for more. More connection, more meaning, more purpose.

Something so simple and easy to set up gave this man something to be proud of. Something to connect over. Something to feel good about.

That’s real dementia care. Not handing out PRN medication to numb a need that can be met with connection and purpose.

Don’t correct - connect!

If your person gets the facts wrong, don’t argue or try to correct them. Join their reality. Correcting increases distress whereas connection reduces it!

Instead of: “Mum, your dad passed away years ago.”
Try: “Tell me about your dad, what was he like.”

Make them feel needed

Give them a job. Simple familiar tasks - fold towels drying dishes, setting the table. It’s not about productivity or perfection, it’s about purpose!

We all want to feel useful, dementia doesn’t take that away.

Less clutter = less confusion

The brain with dementia struggles with too much information and clutter. Think clear surfaces and removal of unnecessary items.

✨ Holistic OT Update ✨

We’re now officially working from home and no longer have a physical office space. As always, we continue to remain on the road 🚗 primarily providing in-home services, that hasn’t changed! Our office was mainly for drop-ins and team work time, and with a smaller team, we no longer need the space. Our care, values, and commitment to our clients remain exactly the same.

We are a bit happy about the fact that slippers are now acceptable work attire 🤭

A personal update and message from Brooke 💫

Dear Holistic OT Community,

I am writing to you with a personal update and what it means for the future of Holistic OT.

This season of life is calling me to refocus my energy on a few key priorities—both personally and professionally. This includes my number one priority which is to be a mum to my two beautiful daughters!

To align with this season, and with much (very deep!) thought and consideration, I have made the decision to downsize operations temporarily and operate more intentionally.

Essentially, this means do more of the work that lights up my soul and less of the work that doesn't.

Please rest assured: Holistic OT is not shutting down. We know the positive impact that our service has had on many clients and their families across our community. We want to continue to provide a service and positively touch the lives of many more clients to come. We are simply consolidating our services and streamlining operations for the foreseeable future.

We will be focusing on providing the programs and services that light up our soul and make the most meaningful impact. This means we will maintain a particular focus on Aged and Dementia Care and this will be our priority (the whole reason why Holistic OT is here in the first place!)

To everyone who has trusted Holistic OT on your journey: I want to personally thank you. This adjustment is a step toward staying grounded, focused, and impactful in the work we do and how we deliver it. To me, it really is about going back to my "why" and the reason I started Holistic OT back in 2018.

I will be forever grateful for your support and look forward to moving through this season of life with a fresh focus for Holistic OT.

Much Love,
Brooke

Bathrooms are a major concern for many ageing clients and their families, especially in some of the older style homes. Personal care (e.g., showering, dressing, grooming and toileting) activities are those that most of us want to be able to do independently. But for many older adults who experience physical and/or cognitive changes this becomes increasingly more difficult.

Recommendations to modify the environment to make it safer is one way us as occupational therapists support our clients to live more safely and independently in their homes. It also supports their dignity.

Whilst there are many, here are 5 common recommendations we might make following a detailed in home assessment:

💫 Shower platforms/ramps to create level access into the shower and avoid the trip hazard.

💫 Grab rails in the toilet and bathroom/shower.

💫 Bidets when wiping after toileting becomings a struggle.

💫 Removal of the shower screen/door to create a wider entry point to make things less confined.

💫 Hand held shower hoses for when our clients might need to shower seated.

This advice is general in nature. We suggest an in-home assessment from an appropriately trained occupational therapist for personalised recommendations suited to your specific needs!
