Dementia is a general term for a decline in cognitive function. People with dementia may have problems with memory, language, thinking, problem solving, and other functions that affect daily living.

Dementia isn’t a normal part of ageing — it’s a group of disorders caused by abnormal brain changes. These changes lead to cognitive decline, which can be severe enough to impede independent life, affect behaviours, and alter feelings or relationships.

Currently more than 55 million people live with dementia worldwide, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year according to the WHO. It is also currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people globally.
