This Speech Pathology Week, our Speech Pathologists have been exploring Speech Pathology Australia’s theme, “Communication creates possibility,” through the lens of AAC.

This Speech Pathology Week, our Speech Pathologists explore Speech Pathology Australia Pathology Australia’s theme, "Communication creates possibility," through the lens of AAC.

Today, we are exploring the "possibility to participate", with our Speech Pathologist and Assistive Technology Consultant, Shannon.

As Shannon shares:

"I love that AAC provides everyone with the opportunity to participate meaningfully in all the different parts of their lives. This could be joining in a conversation, sharing a joke with friends, contributing an idea, making a decision, having a say in what happens next, or being able to advocate for what is important to you.

For me, meaningful participation is about more than simply being present or included. It’s about having the opportunity to actively contribute, make genuine choices and have real influence over the things that matter in your own life. AAC can make that possible."

Communication can create opportunities to participate in the things that matter to us, from sharing a laugh with friends and family to making choices, expressing ourselves and having a say in everyday life.

This Speech Pathology Week, our Speech Pathologists explore Speech Pathology Australia’s theme, “Communication creates possibility,” through the lens of AAC.

Today, we are exploring the “possibility to choose”, with our Speech Pathologist and Assistive Technology Consultant, Ashley.

As Ashley shares:

“Communicating our thoughts is such a big part of what makes us individuals, what makes us different. Supporting someone to express their genuine thoughts means that sometimes we are helping someone say the unexpected or something that someone else may not want to hear. No one always gets what they want, but everyone should be able to say what they are thinking, to be part of that conversation, and contribute without needing to be invited to do so.”

Genuine choice is about more than being offered options. It means having the opportunity to express what matters to you, make decisions and have an active role in the conversations and choices that shape your life.

Today, we are exploring the "possibility to belong", with our Speech Pathologist and Assistive Technology Consultant, Lisa.

As Lisa shares:

"One of the most meaningful parts of working with AAC is seeing people included in everyday moments; whether that is joining in a conversation, making a joke or just being able to show their personality to the people around them. Communication opens the door to being able to make that connection, and find that sense of belonging."

Communication can create opportunities to be part of everyday moments, share humour, express personality and connect with the people around us. Sometimes, belonging begins with simply being able to join in.

This Speech Pathology Week, our Speech Pathologists explore Speech Pathology Australia’s theme, "Communication creates possibility," through the lens of AAC.

Today, we are exploring the "possibility to grow", with our Speech Pathologist Kayleigh.

Growth can look different for every person. In AAC, it can mean developing confidence, independence and self-advocacy, expanding communication, building connections and having more opportunities to participate in everyday life.

As Kayleigh shares:

"One of the greatest parts of being a Speech Pathologist in the AAC space is witnessing what becomes possible when someone has a way to communicate. With the right support, AAC users can grow in confidence, independence, connection and self-advocacy - and their possibilities can keep growing too.

In my work with AAC, I’ve been fortunate to witness the incredible possibilities that open up when people have access to a way to communicate - from making friends and joining conversations, to sharing their thoughts, expressing themselves and being part of their communities. I consider myself extremely lucky to be part of their AAC journey."

Communication can support growth over time, creating opportunities to build confidence, develop independence, strengthen connections and have a greater say in how someone communicates and participates in their life.

This Speech Pathology Week, our Speech Pathologists explore Speech Pathology Australia theme, “Communication creates possibility,” through the lens of AAC.

Today, we are exploring the ‘possibility to learn’, with our Speech Pathologist and Assistive Technology Consultant, Emma.

As Emma shares:

“AAC can make learning so much more accessible by giving someone a reliable way to express what they know, share their ideas, and actively participate in learning.

AAC can support a person to really demonstrate their knowledge, while also giving them tools to ask questions and seek clarification to further support their learning.

Access to AAC also supports people to self-advocate about what helps them learn, and what kind of support they need in that moment.”

Communication is not just about being able to respond. It can give someone the means to demonstrate what they know, ask questions, seek clarification and communicate what they need to support their learning.

Speech Pathology Week 2026 | Communication creates possibility...

This year, Speech Pathology Australia has chosen “Communication creates possibility” as the theme for Speech Pathology Week, highlighting the possibilities communication can create to connect, learn, grow, belong, participate, choose and thrive.

Throughout the week, our Speech Pathologists are sharing their own perspectives on what these possibilities can mean through the lens of AAC.

We are beginning with the 'possibility to connect', with our Clinical Team Leader and Speech Pathologist Claire.

AAC can support people to build and maintain relationships by giving them meaningful ways to start conversations, share their thoughts and express their personality.

As Claire explains:

“Working with people who use AAC, some of the most rewarding outcomes I've seen from building successful communication systems have been those little things that we can take for granted: Being able to start a conversation when they feel like it, instead of waiting for someone else to approach them. Sharing a thought using words that reflect their unique sense of humour. Those tiny moments often feel like big moments to me.”

Claire remembers one of her first experiences with AAC as a new graduate: meeting a young adult who was deep in conversation with her support worker, using her AAC system to try to convince them to play a practical joke on another support worker. Claire remembers how clearly she was able to explain what she wanted to happen, and how hilarious the whole interaction was.

It is a lovely reminder that communication is about so much more than expressing needs. It can create opportunities to start a conversation, share a laugh, express personality and connect with others on your own terms. Sometimes, the moments that may seem small to others can be the moments that mean the most.

Using AAC isn't just about having the right device - it's about having the confidence and skills to use it in different situations.

Operational competency is all about understanding how to access and use an AAC system in the way that works best for you. As Jamie's story shows, that might mean using different access methods depending on where you are or what you're doing.

Every AAC journey is different, and finding what works can open up more opportunities to communicate with confidence.
