Dr Deborah Carrington - South West Perinatal Home Visits

Dr Deborah Carrington - South West Perinatal Home Visits I am a Perinatal Rural Generalist GP and Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in Portland Victoria. My training began in medical school at the University of Melbourne.

I work in clinic in Portland and provide home visits throughout South West Victoria for breastfeeding, sleep, settling, oral ties and more. After my hospital residency I decided to train as a rural general practitioner. In 2016, I was awarded the Richard Gutch Medal for achieving the highest scores in Victoria for the RACGP Fellowship Examinations. In addition to my general practice experience, I

have completed formal studies in lactation with Australasian Lactation Courses, Lactation Education Resources and Possums Education. I have also completed a Diploma of Child Health through the University of Sydney. I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and an NDC Accredited Practitioner. I have extensive training and experience in assessment and release of oral ties, including completing the IBCLC Masterclass: Oral Habilitation of the Breastfeeding Dyad.

I have a neurodiversity affirming approach and have a special passion for working with neurodivergent families, including ADHD prescribing and coaching. LGBTQI+ and non-binary patients are welcome and safe here. When I am not seeing patients, you will usually find me supervising and teaching general practice registrars. I work as a Senior Medical Educator for RACGP, supporting doctors training to be specialist General Practitioners. In 2024, I qualified as a Rural Generalist with RACGP and ACRRM. This was the first time that Breastfeeding Medicine was recognised as an Advanced Skill for Rural Generalism. I live on a rural property outside Portland with my husband and four children. When I am not at work I drink lots of tea, go for long bike rides and lose track of time in my enormous vegetable garden.

I had a lovely day off today to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. I can't quite believe it's been that long (but yes, I did get married very young).

I was already feeling ancient when my thirteen year old daughter recently rolled her eyes at me and said 'Ugh, Mum, you're such a millennial.'

I am officially getting old.

With my clinic appointments booked out until August, I have added a new option to my home visit website - GP antenatal appointments!

This would be ideal for those struggling with nausea and fatigue, or for those juggling small children. It is also a way for my patients to be seen more quickly if you've had a positive pregnancy test and want to be seen as soon as possible.

For safety and continuity of care, you will need to be a patient of Active Health or be willing to join as a new clinic patient.

This is not a replacement for your midwife and hospital care, but is a convenient alternative to the appointments where you would normally go to a GP clinic.

Medicare rebates apply. There are no travel fees for Portland/Heywood and nearby areas.

You can book directly online at www.drdeborahcarrington.com, or complete the online enquiry form if you can't see an appointment time that meets your needs.

With the weather being so cold and my clinic appointments being so booked out, I have added in some extra home visit slots. One of the best things about home visits is knowing mums and babies are warm, relaxed and comfortable with their own space and routine. I know what a challenge it is to get to clinic with a baby, especially when it is bucketing down outside! 🌧❄️🌨☃️☔️

You can now book a home visit or telehealth directly via www.drdeborahcarrington.com or send me a message through the contacts page.

Wow, how are we nearly halfway through the year? I haven't posted for ages, and the honest truth is that 2026 has been kicking my butt so far. On top of our car being hit, my poor husband broke his foot and couldn't drive for weeks. I needed to take carer's leave for a while, and this has unfortunately led to my appointment books filling up into late July. I don't like it when this happens as I worry about families missing out on help.

I am continuing to make space for home visits for those who need to be seen more urgently. Bookings can be made directly through my website, or you can message me through the booking page.

Here's hoping the rest of the year is delightfully dull!

Geez, I am not having a good week. I got plowed into whilst sitting parked in a carpark this afternoon. The door is just hanging on. This may make home visits a bit more complicated whilst I deal with insurance and repairs. (I'm fine, just shaken up). I'll do my best to minimise disruption to anyone, I promise.

We have a new doctor! This is Dr Philippa Tepper, and we are so lucky to have her joining us in Portland. Philippa has previously worked in Portland Urgent Care, so you may recognise her. She is training to be a specialist Rural Generalist, which is a huge blessing to our community. Please say hello and help her feel welcome. 😊
